When it comes to web design, even the smallest detail can have a huge impact on your conversion rates. Whether you’re making the final touches to your online store, or you’ve already launched; adding a favicon is one of those small details you don’t want to miss!

What is a favicon?

A favicon is a small square image that represents your brand in the browser tab. Typically favicons feature a logo, the first letter of the company name or simply an image that reflects the specifics of the website it represents.

Favicons, also known as favourite icons, serve as the visual representation of a website. These small icons, associated with specific websites, appear on browser tabs, bookmark lists, and more. The term 'favicon' derives from 'favorite icon' and is also referred to as a

Take a glance at the top of your browser, and you'll likely spot various favicon tabs, including the one for the Shopify Community Blog! By adding these icons through your theme editor or website's coding, they enhance visual appeal and aid in easy page identification.

What are the benefits of using a favicon?

Adding a favicon to your online store can help strengthen your brand and add a polished look to your website.

Remember logos are important! They can increase your brand awareness and allow your audience to easily remember your brand name. In addition, they have the potential to ingrain your logo and brand in your customers' memory.

A favicon is a great way to inform your potential customers that they have landed on your company page. It can also assist with making your customers feel more secure about their purchases.

What is the recommended size for the image?

When creating a favicon, the ideal size is either 16x16 pixels or 32x32 pixels. If your image is too large, then Shopify will automatically reduce the image to 32x32 pixels when you upload it to your online store.

Keep in mind that these images are displayed quite small, so it’s good to make sure that the image you use is readable.

How to add a favicon to your online store?

All Shopify themes have an option within the Theme Settings to add a favicon directly to your online store.

If you navigate to the Theme Editor by selecting Online store > Themes > Edit theme within your Shopify admin, you can select the theme settings towards the bottom left of the page to see the section titled Favicon. This will allow you to upload the image of your choice.

Once the image has been selected and uploaded, you can save the changes you have made and navigate back to your online store. You can now view the new favicon located on your browser tab.

Congratulations! By adding a favicon to your website, you have taken a significant stride towards brand identification and instilling a sense of trust and security in your customers. Your online store now stands out and offers a seamless browsing experience.
