Discussing APIs and development related to customers, discounts, and order management.
I am a developer investigating the possibility of moving an existing ecommerce site to Shopify.
The existing site has discounts on items according to the company that employs a customer. This is not a coupon code that the customer has, but is part of their account.
It caters to employees of companies. The companies have custom contracts and the current site shows the price for the items according to the person that is signed in and the discount they are eligible for because of their company's contract
I read that Shopify can accept coupon codes, but this is not the same as a coupon code
On this site the customer should not have to provide a coupon code
Is this something that Shopify can keep track of in customer accounts? I have read about Shopify's customer segmentation. Is that how I would do this?
This is my first possible use of Shopify and my first post to the Community. I would appreciate any help about my question and about whether I am asking in the correct area of the Community.
Thank you
Shopify has support for companies and B2B customer accounts. You can define a segment based on customers belonging to a company and use that in the customer eligibility condition in the discount.

How is employer information stored in customer accounts? Are you using tags? Metafield values?
As @Kalen_Jordan so kindly mentioned in a previous comment, you can use this tag/metafield value to create a segment of customers.

If so, then you will need an *automatic discount*, instead of a discount code.
Shopify's built-in automatic discount codes don't support segments, tags, or metafields, but you can try my app, Regios Automatic Discounts, which supports customer tags and metafields for customer discounts.
