I am suspecting a compromise on my website due to edits i had not done

If you are talking about edits to your theme know that staff or apps can modify themes when given those permissions.

A few things to do immediately....

Update Password

Turn on 2 factor auth and have the code sent to your cell with each login

Look at who you have given access to your site under user and permissions and pause their access until resolved.
