Got a warning from google that shopify cmp dont follow there rules, have you got the same? I am in sweden and this is what they said when i asked whats missing.

Shopify dont have any support on these questions when i asked shopify.

Per our Help with EU User Consent Policy page checklist point no. 3, you need to give users an option to take affirmative action to indicate consent e.g. clicking an “OK” button or an “I agree” button.

We expect users to be told how the site will use data. We suggest that you make clear that cookies and personal data are used for Personalized advertising in your consent notice/banner.

Per our Help with EU User Consent Policy page checklist point no. 6, you need to explain to users how Google will use their personal data when they give consent on your site by including a link to Google’s Business Data Responsibility site (how Google processes personal information)  from your consent notice.

Please update the consent notice and let us know so that we can request the Google’s Policy team to re-audit.

Sincerely,

Hello from Sweden.

It looks like Shopify’s default CMP (Consent Management Platform) isn't fully compliant with Google’s EU User Consent Policy. Here’s what you can do:

  • Use a GDPR-compliant app – Try Pandectes GDPR Compliance, Consentmo GDPR, or CookieYes, which allow proper consent collection with an explicit “I agree” button.
  • Customize your cookie banner – Ensure it clearly states that data is used for personalized advertising and include a link to Google’s Business Data Responsibility page.
  • Manually edit your consent banner – If you’re comfortable with coding, adjust Shopify’s theme.liquid file or use a custom script to make the changes.
  • Test with Google – After updating, request a re-audit from Google to ensure compliance.

Helle Runns,

Thanks for your query.

It sounds like Google is flagging your Shopify store for not fully complying with the EU User Consent Policy, which is a requirement for websites that use Google services .

Configure the CMP that are certified by CMP and follow the GDPR Compliance.

From the experience I prefer Cookieyes.

Kind Regards

Hi @RunnsSommen,

It looks like Shopify’s default consent banner doesn’t fully meet Google’s EU User Consent Policy. This is a common issue, and the fix is straightforward. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Add an explicit consent button

Google requires users to actively agree to data collection. Your cookie banner should include an “I Agree” or “OK” button that users must click to accept cookies. A simple notice without a clear action is not enough.

2. Clearly state data usage

Your banner should explain how data is used. Mention that cookies and personal data are used for personalized advertising. This transparency is necessary for compliance.

3. Link to Google’s policy

You need to inform users how Google processes their data. Add this link to your banner:
Google Business Data Responsibility

How to implement this in Shopify

  • If you use Shopify’s default cookie banner, it might not have these options. Check Settings → Customer Privacy and see if you can modify the banner text and buttons.
  • If Shopify’s built-in settings don’t allow full customization, use a third-party GDPR/CCPA compliance app from the Shopify App Store. Apps like GDPR Cookie Bar & Compliance (by Pandectes) or Cookiebot offer more control.
  • If you have a developer, ask them to manually update the consent banner by modifying the theme’s code or using Google’s Consent Mode.

Next Steps

After updating your banner, inform Google and request a review. This should resolve the warning.

If Shopify’s support isn’t helping, using a third-party app is the fastest solution. Let me know if you need help choosing one!

Stay inspired,
Best regards,
