Re: Shopify Email

Can I create and use custom email segments in Shopify?

I'm currently using Klaviyo but would love to move over to Shopify email permanently having sent a couple of tests.

I want to create a segment of people that have opted out of Mother's Day emails that I captured on Klaviyo. Is there a way to create my own segment on Shopify? So I can import these people into an opted out segment and next year send it to all people on the mailing list - except this segment?

Also I want to make sure that it is possible to send emails allowing people to opt out of events such as Father's Day/Mother's Day using Shopify Email and that this will then save them as a segment? I can't see a way of doing it which will be a big stumbling block.

Hey Angie. Shopify Email just uses Shopify's default segments feature in the Customers section.

So, I recommend going to your Customers section (https://your  store.myshopify.com/admin/customers) and playing with the segment functionality Shopify has to see if it can create the type of segments you need. See more on Shopify segments in the documentation here: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/customer-segmentation/customer-segments

It's pretty flexible since you can use metafields, etc. , so I assume it would meet your needs. You may just need to make sure everything is tagged appropriately before exporting them from your email provider.

You mentioned you're using Klaviyo, so I recommend also checking out this article on how to sync data from Klaviyo to Shopify in case it can automate it for you: https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360030919351-How-to-sync-fields-from-Klaviyo-to-Shopify

Hello @Angie_Freese,

Good day! Gina from flareAI app helping Shopify merchants get $5Million+ in sales from Google Search, on autopilot.

Yes, you can create a segment of people that have opted out of Mother's Day emails using Shopify email. To do it:

1. Go to your Shopify admin panel and click on the "Customers" tab.

2. Click on "Create segment" in the upper right corner.

3. Name your segment and choose the criteria for the segment. In your case, you want to include people who have opted out of Mother's Day emails, so you can create a condition like "Marketing opt-in status is not subscribed to Mother's Day emails".

4. Click "Save" to create the segment.

5. Once the segment is created, you can use it to exclude those customers from future Mother's Day email campaigns.

Regarding your second question, yes, it is possible to allow people to opt-out of specific email campaigns such as Father's Day/Mother's Day using Shopify email. When you create an email campaign, you can include an unsubscribe link in the email that allows customers to opt-out of future emails from that specific campaign. When a customer clicks the unsubscribe link, they will be added to the "Marketing opt-in status is unsubscribed" segment in Shopify, which you can use to exclude them from future email campaigns.

Hi Gina

Thanks for this, it's really helpful. I've set up the email and I've got the page saying 'you've successfully unsubscribed' for - for example - upcoming father's day promotion, I just can't work out how to get the unsubscribe button to group the unsubscribers into a segment - can you please help explain how to do this?

Thanks

Angie

Just picking this up - does anyone have any ideas?

Hey @Angie_Freese

Just picking up on this as I decided to switch over from Klaviyo a few weeks ago and realise I will have to send an 'Opt-out' email for Father's Day pretty soon, and again next year for Mother's Day.

As yet I've not been able to find a solution, but reading between the lines in the response from @flareAI I wonder if by creating a new customer segment that contains all of your email subscribers and giving it a specific name, such as 'mothers-day-only' and sending your opt-out email to that list, when people hit Unsubscribe, will they only be unsubscribed from that specific segment and not from your original 'all subscribers' segment?

Does that make sense? or have you already found an alternative solution?

Also, I was wondering, did you actually create a specific unsubscribe button, or just use the link in the footer?

Cheers

Darren

Hi

I have found a solution which works really well. I don't want people to unsubscribe altogether, just to group customers into those who don't want to receive Mother's Day/Father's Day emails. So I used Shopify forms and sheets which is a free app to create an opt out form. I then sent a 'would you like to opt out of Father's Day emails' campaign to all my subscribers with a button that when clicked takes you to the form. Once they have filled in their info - name and email address and submit, when you go back to the forms and sheets app, you can click on view segment and bulk edit them all have the meta tag Father's Day opt out or just bulk add a tag to each customer, whatever you'd prefer. Then when you set up your Father's Day emails or whatever campaign it is you're doing, just create a segment with all subscribers that don't have that meta tag. It's worked really well and all free which is a bonus!

Ahh, yes.
The Forms app was going to be my next stop, as I realised that the default Newsletter Sign-up block from Shopify literally only collects email addresses and doesn't give you the option of adding first_name or last_name fields.

I did manage to create an email with a custom Unsubscribe button in it, and I tried it out on a small test segment of myself and a couple of friends, but as suspected, when I used the Unsubscribe it applied that to me across ALL segments as opposed to just the test segment.

So it seems like your solution is the only logical process and a 1-click unsubscribe just isn't an option.

Thanks for your input.

Greatly appreciated.
