Can I track purchases in google analytics if I remove gtag.js from global file ?

I am looking forward to create custom events in google anlytics using google tag manager. For that I would use data layer. google developer website shows a script that has to be pasted in theme.liquid. If I have to paste this in my theme.liquid, there is gtag.js in theme.liquid that i pasted to record the purchases.I would have to remove this to avoid duplication in puechase conversions on google analytics. If I remove gtag.js from theme.liquid would I have to implement purrchase event in google analytics using google tag manager to record the purchases on google analytics
