Hello,
I have owned a jewelry brand with a partner for the last 4 years. We have decided to split our business and each create our own brands. I am wondering if I am able to export our customer list from our shared business into my new business as we will be selling the same products. Thanks!
Hi @GoldieMaeCo 👋 see the docs https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/import-export-customers
💣Make sure you research and test the account process on yourself. Make sure customers expect your contact. Shopify does not transfer customer accounts among stores, to make customers have accounts on new stores you can send account invites and all that entails such as risking being marked as spam.

When it comes to exporting your customer list from a shared business, you'll need to consider a few factors. If you both have consent from customers to use their information, you may be able to export it legally. However, be sure to comply with data protection laws, like GDPR if applicable, which require customer consent for sharing their data. It's best to consult a legal professional to ensure you're handling this appropriately.
Hello @GoldieMaeCo
Yes, it’s possible to export your customer list from your shared Shopify store to use in your new business. However, there are a few important considerations, especially regarding data privacy and customer consent. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to approach this:
Since the customer list belongs to the shared business, it’s essential to have an agreement with your partner about sharing customer data. Make sure both of you are aligned on which customers you’ll be contacting for your new business. A written agreement could help prevent any misunderstandings in the future.
If you both agree, you can easily export the customer list:
Even though you’ll be selling similar products, legally and ethically, customers need to give their consent to be contacted by your new brand. There are a couple of ways to approach this:
Data privacy regulations like GDPR in the EU or CCPA in California require you to handle customer data responsibly. If your customer base includes residents of areas with strict privacy laws, make sure you’re compliant. This includes having a clear privacy policy and, if necessary, an option for customers to unsubscribe at any time.
Once you have customer consent and the exported list, you can import the data to your new Shopify store:
By following these steps, you can bring your existing customer relationships into your new business respectfully and legally. This way, your loyal customers will know about your brand while ensuring a smooth transition for your email marketing efforts.
Let me know if you have any questions on any of these steps!
Best regards,
Daisy
