Hi guys,

I've read a bit about facebook ads for shopify and am trying to improve my ads performance.

What is the best way to do that without spending too much money?

Update! Thanks for all of the feedback and suggestions.

That free Facebook ads email crash course was incredibly helpful! I used that and the turbo retargeting app suggested and now my ads are doing 3x better. ?

Facebook ads aren’t easy.

And very rarely do I find quick wins or tricks with them.

But…. I did just recently find this app called Turbo Retargeting and holy sh...

When I first heard their motto I was a little skeptical..

“Build your most profitable ad campaign in seconds”. I’ve tried so many apps with little to no results..

But turbo was different.

There support was incredible.

Their interface is so easy to use.

And their campaigns worked like a charm!

My campaign started off with these results LOL! $0.01 for a purchase.

If you’re trying to “easily” achieve a higher ROI with your Facebook ads, check them out!! And huge thanks to their support

Study study study! ?

I took a number of paid courses and none of them were really that helpful. They mostly focused on selling info products..

I almost gave up until I recently took a free Facebook ads crash course on a blog. It was custom for Shopify marketers/stores and it was incredibly tactical.

Lots of free actionable advice.

Highly suggest you check it out. (Lesson # 2 showed me how to create my most profitable Facebook ad EVER).

The team behind it even replied to all of my questions via email lol. FREE CONSULTING ??

Have you looked at the audience breakdown?

I learned that Instagram traffic was more expensive and stopped targeting it.

I can show you how if needed

This is where Shopify apps come in handy! There are plenty of apps that help you with improving your performance. When it comes to FB advertising, I find a lot of the issues come from targeting. You may think you're targeting the right audience, but a tiny mistake can waste hundreds of dollars. As you mentioned, you do retargeting ads, but are they really targeting the right people?

Here are my suggestions:

1. Understand your target market

You have to research your target market. Knowing the customer demographics helps you design ads based on target audiences. It can be pretty hard to know who your target market is, but apps on Shopify (https://apps.shopify.com/poln) can identify the best audiences for you.

2. Ad Design

You can design the ads yourself or work with an agency to develop them. They will design various types of ads, such as video ads, static image ads, full-page takeovers, animated images, and so on. Include a clear call to action (CTA) in your images to entice people into clicking on them. A CTA is basically a button that says Learn More, Buy Now, Sign Up Now, etc.

3. Optimization

There are many levels of optimization that help in producing the best results. The optimization techniques include:

  • Testing ad frequency
  • Experimenting with the time of placing ads
  • Placing different ads to different people
  • Testing ads on various sites

4. Monitor performance

The final task is to monitor ad performance. Make sure the ads provide the desired outcome. If they aren’t meeting your goals, there is something wrong with the landing page, ads, or other things.

Shopify Facebook Ad & Display Ad Best Practices

Here are some best practices for Facebook and display ads:

  • Use a strong product image
  • Add a promotion
  • Have a clear call to action (CTA)
  • Include your company logo
  • Add a strong headline
  • Instill a sense of urgency

Hey @Tim_K,

Mind reading it too?

Tim, you shouldn't apply "set up and forget" approach for facebook ads.

Test different audiences, creatives, wordings, messages, rich media options etc.

There are so many things that could impact your traffic and sales.

I advise you to learn a bit about ecommerce marketing, attend Virtual Ecommerce Marketing Summit: https://get.promorepublic.com/ecommerce-summit-2018/ It's free and you could learn from 5 experts from Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress, NinjaOutreach and PromoRepublic.

Hope it helps.

Advertising is a constant game of tweaking, testing and improving.

If you don't freshen them up, the vast majority of campaigns become stale and lose their effectiveness over time.

There are loads of tools out there that you can use to split test campaigns. When you become familiar with the process of optimizing your ads, paid traffic can light a fire under your business and you can achieve huge growth rates. But you have to be comfortable with the testing and iteration process. Not every campaign will be a winner.

Here's an article my colleague Michael wrote on the topic - The Priceless Secret To Ever-Improving Ecommerce Results.

Hey Guys,

Just curious, if you've experimented with product video's for advertizing your products.

Do you think that would be of help in driving traffic or engagement?

Hi Darin,

Before venturing into facebook advertising without knowing how to use their advertising platform is a bad idea. You will definitely learn new things while you are at it because facebooks ad platforms itself is pretty self explanatory and they give guide lines to help newbies.

But let me tell you one thing, It is in the interest of online advertising platforms like facebook, google, twitter etc... that people know how to use their platforms.

So that more people will use it and they will make more money. So all the advertising platforms have provided detailed instructions on how to use their advertsing platforms in a better way.

Facebook has "Blueprint" learning program where they will teach you all about running facebook ads and in the end you will even get a   certification.

you can try the blueprint certification here : https://www.facebook.com/blueprint

I suggest you spend a day or two and complete theri certification course, this will let you know all the cool advertising options available in facebook that most people dont know to make use of.

Let me give you a glimpse of one such cool option. You can use a snippet of code called "Facebook pixel" for remarketing. Which means, you can track people who have clicked on your facebook ads.

There are lot many things you can do using facebook pixel as described in this article https://www.globalmediainsight.com/blog/complete-guide-remarketing-facebook-pixel-2/

This is one of many other features that most people starting out on FB ads wont use .

Let me know if you need to know anything specific about facebook advertising.

Currently, we are researching a new ad-retargeting solution called socialport.io. You can share any content on any platform with our URL shortener. When somebody clicks the link, he will be retargeted. In this way, you can build your custom audience before buying ad.

We've seen that many store owners are driving traffics with ad but no sale is made. Our solution can save your ad dollar and increase ad conversion rate via more accurate retargeting.

Please let me know if it sounds working for you. I can give you free trial.

When it comes to Facebook ads we find that targetting is the most important part. If your target is too wide or small it can really hurt your chances of who see them. A lot of people tend to first come up with all the different sections of targeting.

First think about location. If you ad has to do rain boots you most likely don't want to show those ads to people who live in Vegas, Nevada where it doesn't rain often.

Next, you have to think about demographics, interest, and behaviors. You don't want to just put all of these in that very first of section of the ad set. Because you audience just has to belong to one group. You will want to keep together ideas that are similar like maybe you want to target people who like brands such as Nordstrom, J crew, and Anthropolgie. These could all be grouped together since they are very similiar. Next you would could group people who like online shopping, fashion & apparel, and are quick to purchase. See how these things are similar, one person could like all or one and still would be good enough. Seperating how you want to target one is very important.

Facebook doesn't show your audience size anymore, but it does have a scale of too narrow or too wide. Try keeping it right it the middle. Play around with it and see what type of things make it change. Coming up with all different ways to target potential customers will help you find the right audience.

When you are playing with Facebook ads, it's very hard for new stores to hit the target customers accurately.

You can try our ad retargeting product, socialport.io to build your custom audience before paying ad.

With Socialport.io, you can add Facebook Pixel to any page even if the page belongs to a 3rd party. With more customer data, you can make better ad-buy decisions.

We can offer you a free trial if you are interested.

Big question, thanks for asking. We go through this all the time on accounts.

My $0.02 is this: The reason curiosity is so important in our world of performance marketing is, uncertainty is lingering around every corner. We often have no choice but to become extremely comfortable in ambiguous situations. And once we start approaching work with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts.

For example, are some of our favorite questions to ask ourselves when managing ad campaigns:

  • Why is this happening in my account?
  • What could I do to make this better?
  • What are other companies doing to grow?

Anyway, we wrote a longer blog post on this if you want more info: https://bit.ly/2CwcyIX

Hope that helps! See ya and good luck

Three biggest mistakes in e-commerce campaigns and how to solve it.

You probably have read many guides on how to run campaigns for your e-commerce store and I don’t want to take another hour or two of your time.
In less than 5 minutes you will know what type of campaigns you need to run to grow sales in your store! Not doing these campaigns is one of the most popular mistakes.

I sort these campaigns by the revenue they could generate. So if you want to start – start from the top one.

1. Remarketing campaigns

A visitor comes to your site, learn about your products but leave before purchasing. Remarketing campaign displays your ads on sites & apps they visit later, bringing them back and keeping your brand top-of-mind.

Why it’s important?
  • you have already paid for the acquisition
  • those people already know your brand
  • a little trust is build
  • could be ready for purchase but something occurred during checkout (abandoned checkout recovery)
How to set it up in Facebook Business Manager?
  1. Create a custom audience based on traffic or engagement
  2. Create a new campaign “catalog sales”
  3. Create a separated ad set for each stage of the funnel. Those are top 6 audiences where you can easily get extra sales.
    • Visited website but didn’t purchase
    • View content (every page with Call To Action) but didn’t purchase
    • Added to cart but didn’t purchase
    • Engaged with videos
    • Engaged with Instagram
    • Engaged with Facebook
  4. Use different copy based on the place of the funnel. Try to give good incentive (as a discount or free shipping) for people who added to cart but didn’t purchase.
  5. Test different creative – single image ads, carousel ads, video ads to see which creative works best for your business.
  6. Doing it this way you’re going to show products which visitors saw on your website.
  7. Pro tip: try to do this campaign with Traffic objective.
2. Prospecting campaigns

The goal of this campaign is to get new visitors to your website. You constantly need new people floating to your store – that's why you have to have prospecting campaigns in place

Why it’s important?

You know that the remarketing campaign is this campaign which makes you money. But you also know that you need a constant flow of new people to your website to have a remarketing bucket full of potential customers. There are many challenges you’re going to face doing prospecting campaigns. What type of campaign you should run, what type of objective do you want to promote, what about audiences, creative, copy? Let me help you with it.

How to set it up in Facebook Business Manager?
  1. Use Facebook Audience Insights to know your customers better. AI (Audience Insights) will show you who your customers are – they occupation, age, gender, websites they like.
  2. Create Lookalike audiences based on previous events like Purchase, add to cart, initiate checkout, content view (+ content view at least 2 times), top 25% time spent on the website)
  3. Create a new prospecting campaign. What type of objective should you select? Test it! Three main objectives to test: website conversion, traffic, catalog sales.
  4. Try to play with the manual bid to bully your competitors. If your average cost per event (like Purchase, landing page view etc) is 10$ – try with the double or triple amount (20 or 30$).
  5. Creative: start with something simple but don’t miss the video ads. Even simple slideshow video is better than no video.
  6. Copy: as above – start with something simple. You can always base copy on this article: 10 Best Copywriting Formulas.
  7. Plan experiment, write it down, run, analyze, optimize, test again. It might take you some time to find a good audience, creative & copy but when you’ll find it – scaling your Facebook Ads going to be much more effective.
3. Engagement campaigns

All ads in PPE (Post Per Engagement) campaign help me to find a good copy, good creative, good audiences and get good engagement on ads. How you can lower your cost of advertising it in a few simple steps? Let me show you.

Why it’s important?

The old and simple rules say: if you want to have cheap advertising – make your ads popular. But how to do it? You can either create viral videos or run a dedicated campaign to get engagement on ads. I like to call it “bucket of ads”.

How to set it up in Facebook Business Manager?
  1. Start a new campaign, as objective choose Post Per Engagement (PPE)
  2. Optimize for video views
In each ad set test three ads (one video, one single image, and one carousel).
  3. Each ad set it’s a new, individual audience.
  4. You don’t need a high budget – a few dollars a day are enough to determine if the audience is interested in your product.
  5. Put more money behind the audience with the highest number of clicks and engagement. Stop those which performs badly.
  6. Copy ID of the ad and put it in other campaigns – that’s how you can start the fresh campaign but with an ad which has good engagement.
Good luck!
Your store can sell more. We can prove it.

Choose from three different programs:

By choosing the awareness of your audience, you can create a brand that recognizes or expands your ad.

This is a statement that you want to attract good customers and generate electricity. This is known as the Top Plan (TOFU).

Decision making:

As for the purpose of payment, we will try to build support. There are many ways to do this on Facebook.

  1. Website, application, or information
  2. Share by page, content, description, interests, and shares
  3. Set up the App Store in the Google Play Store
  4. watch the video
  5. Generation

The purpose of the change is to bring people together. Through these ads, Facebook can choose your business, store, or sales.

Every business deserves it and sometimes you want it all. But you may not advertise well to potential buyers who have tried to choose between you and your competitors.

The content should match the marketing section. The only thing that matters is that you will meet your audience, which is the most important part of your advertising business.
