Hi, I've recently had my client install GA4 using the direct integration within Shopify, but, in doing so, it's broken their UA bounce rate (gone from 40% to 3%). I've noticed within their page code that the Global site tag has been implemented twice on their site, and that Google Analytics is showing up as Google Analytics and as Global Site Tag so there is some issue with tag duplication but I don't know how to fix it. Help!
How is their UA set up done? Shopify's native UA (or GA3) fires an old version of analytics called analytics.js. You can read more about it in my guide The Finest Google Analytics Setup In Shopify For Splendid Data. Whatever is pushed into one, does not carry to the other. Stores that use both native set ups in Shopify will not see a bounce rate issue.
However, maybe they have other UA tags using gtag.js that is firing? I'd see if there's a need for it and the answer is likely no, then remove it.
Hi Josh, thank you so much for replying, I really appreciate it. They used the Shopify integration for UA as well so is that where the issue is? I'm reading through your guide but wanted to check what the best option for moving forward would be - is it to not use the Shopify integration for either and instead apply the code directly to the site, or use GTM, or is there a way to use the Shopify integration but amend it somehow so it works?
