SEO, AdWords, affiliates, advertising, and promotions
Hi there,
New to Shopify so sorry if this is a newb question. Also just FYI I cross post this over from the original post on the technical forums. https://community.shopify.com/c/Technical-Q-A/Google-Ads-GDN-Auto-Tagging-GCLID-Being-Stripped/m-p/5...
Issue Details:
I've configured a Google Display Network Campaign that's driving traffic to one of my clients Shopify stores.
I have auto tagging enabled in my Google Ads accounts which let's Google Analytics see when hits are coming from Google Ads. This is done by google appending a gclid query parameter to the URL before it gets sent over to the end destination (shopify store). Trouble is that this seems to be being stripped or not working for some reason.
I saw that my client has redirect all domains to this domain enabled and I'm worried that the parameter is being stripped on redirect. Though I'm not certain this is the exact cause of the issue.
I saw another post that I can't find anymore which indicated that I may just need to point the domain directly to the shopify store via DNS record but I don't have access to DNS yet (getting it friday) to test that theory.
I've never worked on a site where auto tagging didn't work out of the box so I'm thinking this is something Shopify specific and would love if anyone could point me in the right direction.
Wanted to bump this post because getting quality campaign data in analytics on the back end is critical! Just an update it looks like all traffic for a shopify store is send to a cloud flare CDN IP and the cname is pointing to a shops.myshopify.com . I haven't been able to get any reasonable answer from tech support but common sense would point to a custom routing engine handles the move from shops.myshopify.com to the specific shop's URL. Within the process of this routing the gclid parameter is somehow stripped away making auto tagging of google ads campaigns not work correctly.
I don't know why this particular query parameter is stripped but I'm still looking for some support in figuring how I can get shopify to play nice with the largest and most dominant search engine in the U.S. market by far. This is a critical PPC advertising channel and I don't think that is an unreasonable request.
Looking for some input from a Shopify rep!
Having the same issue! Did you have any luck finding a fix?
The question is: what is the original link pointing to, how is the redirect being done, and where is the redirect going to?
There are multiple solutions depending on the above 3. Some of which have nothing to do with Shopify.
Dear tnhsaesop,
Have you tried Google tag manager?
Hi,
I have the same issue. What is the solution? Is there no code to pass through the GCLID?
regards
Erwin
Good Afternoon,
Did you ever find a solution to Shopify dropping your gclid parameter?
Thank you in advance
Answer my 3 questions otherwise no one can help you.
not very helpful , your question does not help all the others that are also having their gclid dropped by shopify
can you help the rest of us get this fixed?
I had the developer of the theme look at it and she fixed the issue.
thanks
Erwin
What was the solution to this? Our GCLID being stripped from all final URL campaigns when final URL is a Shopify page.
