Google Ads Conversion Tracking scripts being added by Google App for Smart Shopping campaigns?

Prior to using the Google app to create Smart Shopping campaigns through Shopify, we had always manually created Ad Campaigns in Google Ads, and then added the necessary scripts in the store code following tutorials such as:

Recently though, we have experimented with creating Smart Shopping campaigns using the Google App from within Shopify.  From what I can tell the tracking code is being injected somewhere.  So it was basically doubling up on the conversion tracking code we added manually (to Checkout --> Additional Scripts).

Can I please confirm that this is the case?  Ie when using the Smart Shopping Campaign created using the Google app in Shopify, all the relevant conversion tracking scripts are injected and the corresponding Conversion actions in Google Ads are created?

Thank you.

This is an accepted solution.

That is correct, in this case it is best to disable the manually installed apps.

Or disable the automatically created conversion tracking.

The big difference between my conversion tracking and Google's is that mine includes enhanced conversions, which Google's own tracking does not.

So if you have the ability to enable enhanced conversions, best to use my code so you can benefit from the lost conversions you can track. From testing clients you get 6% to 10% more sales data. Which otherwise would be lost.

Thanks for the fantastic code Emmanuel - awesome to be in touch with the author himself. We have moved across to using your scripts on about 4 sites.

So you recommend just disabling the Google created ad campaign, and using a manually created Smart Shopping campaign, since it offers enhanced conversions?  Not all our sites have enhanced conversions enabled though, so we will experiment with ones that have it enabled.

Thanks again.

When I was talking about disabling, I was merely referring to the conversion action. Located in Google Ads > tools and settings > conversions.

What you do with the campaigns makes no difference. Best to continue to use whatever is performing for your business.

Enhanced conversions is not smart shopping or smart campaign related, it is account related. IE the whole account.
