Google Ads Conversions Disappearing After Being Recorded – Any Solutions?

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a strange and frustrating issue with Google Ads conversion tracking. Conversions that are initially recorded in Google Ads reports are disappearing after a few days, even though they remain accurate in my backend data (Shopify).

Here’s the context:

  • I’m running a single Google Shopping campaign with server-side tracking, Enhanced Conversions, and Consent Mode configured.
  • Shopify shows 6 conversions with a total value of €1,760 for the past week (01-01-2025 to 07-01-2025). Google Ads initially reported the same, but now it shows only 1 conversion worth €70.
  • The missing conversions were visible in the Google Ads "Conversions Summary" report before disappearing.
  • This issue has been ongoing for months and is severely impacting campaign optimization, especially for tROAS.

I’ve contacted Google Ads Support, but they keep suggesting it’s an attribution issue or a reporting delay. However, this isn’t the case because the conversions were visible initially and then removed.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Could this be related to fraud filters, technical bugs, or something else? I’d really appreciate any insights or solutions to help resolve this!

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Professorx1

It sounds like you’re dealing with a pretty frustrating issue—especially when accurate data is crucial for optimizing your campaigns. I’ve come across similar situations, and here’s a breakdown of possible causes and solutions to help you tackle this disappearing conversions problem:

1. Attribution and Consent Mode Misalignment

  • Since you're using server-side tracking, Enhanced Conversions, and Consent Mode, check how they interact. Consent Mode can cause discrepancies when users don’t fully consent to tracking. While conversions might initially appear due to model-based attribution, they can disappear later if attribution models are recalculated.

Solution:
Verify your Consent Mode settings and ensure it's properly configured to align with your tracking setup. Double-check that Enhanced Conversions are firing as intended and sending all necessary data (e.g., email, phone, or other PII) securely.

2. Data Processing Delays or Updates

  • Google Ads can retroactively update conversions if it identifies duplicate data or adjusts for attribution windows. This could explain why conversions initially appear but then disappear.

Solution:
Compare your Shopify backend data with Google’s raw conversion data in Google Analytics. Ensure your reporting windows and attribution models in Google Ads are set to match Shopify’s reporting period.

3. Fraudulent or Invalid Click Filters

  • Google has automated systems to filter out invalid clicks and suspicious conversions. If a conversion is flagged as fraudulent or originating from bot activity, it may initially appear and then be removed.

Solution:
Audit your traffic sources. Use tools like Google Analytics’ Fraud Detection to ensure you aren’t receiving spam traffic. Review the "Attribution" or "Diagnostics" tab in Google Ads to check for anomalies.

4. Server-Side Tracking Implementation Bugs

  • Server-side tracking setups can have misconfigurations that cause discrepancies in recorded conversions, especially if duplicate or incomplete data is sent.

Solution:
Re-test your server-side tracking by simulating conversions. Use Google Tag Assistant or DebugView in GA4 to confirm data consistency. Also, ensure your Shopify-to-Google Ads conversion API is correctly transmitting purchase data.

5. Manual Adjustments by Google

  • Sometimes, Google adjusts conversions if it believes they are overcounted (e.g., due to technical issues or data duplication). This is rare but worth exploring.

Solution:
Ask Google Ads Support to investigate specific conversion IDs that disappeared. Provide evidence from your Shopify backend and cross-reference with your conversion logs to prove data accuracy.

Proactive Measures to Minimize Impact

  • Enable tROAS Safeguards: Add a safety buffer to tROAS targets to prevent campaigns from overreacting to missing conversions.
  • Use Offline Conversion Tracking: Sync Shopify’s purchase data directly with Google Ads via offline conversion imports to ensure reliability.
  • Test Attribution Models: Switch to "Data-Driven Attribution" or "Last Click" for a week to test if the issue persists.

If the problem continues despite these steps, I recommend escalating the issue to Google’s technical team and asking for detailed logs. Also, consider working with a Shopify or tracking specialist to perform a deep-dive audit of your setup.

I hope these suggestions help you pinpoint and resolve the issue. If you need further assistance or want to dig deeper into specific areas, feel free to reach out!

Best regards,
Daisy

Hi! @Professorx1

Did you manage to find a solution for this? I’m facing the same issue where conversions were recorded and then disappeared. We even made a purchase ourselves through an ad, it recorded the conversion and then disappeared after a couple of days!
