Google Analytics trigger issue

Hi there,

I track my data with Google Analytics and recently discovered a huge gap between Shopify and GA data. It seems that GA is only triggered when my customers click on the GDPR banner to accept all the cookies, which means all the visitors who deny it, or just don't click on the button are not tracked.

I'd like to change the trigger to have some more accurate data, but I have no developer by my side and I really don't know a lot about coding, so I have trouble finding a solution.

Does anyone know what I have to do to change this trigger ?

FYI, I am not the one who set up the website and GA, and we don't use GTM.

Thank you for your help,

Nicolas

I've faced the same issue. Daily user's data and monthly states don't match!

Hi, thank you for your answer. The thing is, I haven't placed anything in GTM, I've put the GA Tag directly in shopify, in Online store > preferences. I don't have any trigger in GTM. Therefore i don't understand what I need to change, or where. I am kind of lost to be honest.

If I use GTM, does it mean I have to set up a trigger for GA in GTM, which will then give me a tag to add somewhere in my shopify store ?

Thank you for your help !

Do you turned on GDPR control in your Online Store > Preferences? Based on GDPR regulations your tracking flow is correct. First you need visitor consent then you start tracking visitor.

Yes, I do have the GDPR consent on. But yesterday, I tried to set up GA with GTM, and it now seems to work properly, tracing the right number of visitors live (I finally have the same number at the same time in Shopify & GA). Does it mean I do not have the right to do it this way if I want to be GDPR compliant ?

Hi @NicolasMorteau ,

It is good to know that it works with GTM now. GDPR is mainly securing user's identifiable data (such as email, phone nomber, address, credit card number etc.) and getting consent before using it.

It is better to discus this with a lawyer but as I know, if you are using Google Analytics just for web analytics and don't send any identifiable customer data, then there should not be any issue. However, if you're using Google Ads dynamic re-marketing with Google Analytics data, I think it will be better to get visitor's consent. However, my last advice is to discuss this with your lawyer especially if your website getting traffic from Europe.
