I'm linking Google Merchant account with my shopify store.

What is this?

"Domain settings: In order to create a Merchant Center Account, we'll need to claim your domain. We can also transfer a domain claim from an existing Merchant Center Account to your new account."

Why would Google "claim" my domain. I sure want to keep the ownership of my domain.

When adding your domain to Google Merchant Center, they need to verify that you own that domain. This is what they refer to by "claiming" your domain. Normally this is done through a variety of methods, which can include adding a meta tag to your theme coding (easiest method). 

You don't need to worry about giving up the ownership of your domain to Google as this isn't what they're doing!
