I've noticed that the Google Indexed pages of my site vary by the thousands ever few days. I've realized that Google has a steady index of my collections pages and standard pages on our website. However the product pages seem to drop off and reappear on Google's index listing every few days.
I'm using Shopify's sitemap that has the regular shopify sitemap and that sitemap then 4 additional sitemaps (blogs, collections, pages & products). We are adding several hundred new products a week so the name of the sitemap is changing daily. Right now the product sitemap is called "/sitemap_products_1.xml?from=7048630855&to=9114164615" and as we add more products that sitemap name will automatically change.
Anyone have a suggestion in fixing this issue?
We're having the same problem with our indexing...have you been able to figure out how to fix this?
I wish I could give you the right answer but we have been experiencing exactly the same issues with our sitemaps with Shopify! We are not complete beginners. We've built multiple e-commerce stores on WordPress/woocommerce and within 3 weeks of being live our product pages and product categories from WordPress are already indexing on google. And no, they never fluctuate, unlike Shopify's sitemaps! (poorly generated, always fluctuating, product pages aren't indexing well and pretty much all useless!)
We have updated our products and added lots of products on our Shopify store since last month and almost none of our new products are updated automatically or being indexed with Shopify's sitemap. It has been more than a month. With WordPress's sitemaps it never takes that long. Wordpress's sitemap gets updated within 2 days and gets indexed within 1-2 weeks. We are able to compare this because we've built another new e-commerce store with WordPress few weeks after our new store with Shopify.
We are moving our store to Wordpress if they can't fix our issues. What's the point of paying $29 a month if they can't even fix their own poorly generated sitemaps? People rave about Shopify for what??? Paying for $29 plus 2.9% per transaction fee and yet their basic and most important aspect of SEO is not even that great. Jesus Christ!!! Shopify, read your forums because we are not the only ones experiencing with your poorly generated sitemaps!! We are paying $29 a month or even more for those successful store owners.
The count in a sitemap is not a true figure of how many pages are indexed. It only reflects which of the ones listed in the sitemap are indexed.
Check the indexing report to see a truer figure.
It imples the sitemap does not exactly match the actual URLs used by the website. I would check some to see if there are any differences. The fluctuations are strange though. As if the sitemap keeps changing the URLs it includes.
It's better to have an accurate sitemap, but it is not a major player in your indexing or ranking. An accurate one may help speed up crawling of the pages it contains, and it can be a decider if Google finds two pages it wants to canonicalse.
Shopify expert did not realy anser that question either. I just notised similar problem only looks like all of product pages no longer indexed or appear in site map!
this happen to me when migrating from another platform to shopify . the numbers in the sitemap makes google crazy...i dont understand anything about the solution provded by the shopify expert in this post (was it a solution?)
This problem still exists. Everytime you add a new product the sitemap for products changes so Google has to reindex the new one which takes time. So, products are constantly dropping out of the index and then reappearing once the new sitemap is indexed.
There has to be a better way to do this.
This problem was on 2016. I have just started my website on shopify and I have the same issue. Almost 2 years passed and Shopify ignored this problem. This is ridiculous!!! %95 users don't notice this problem because probably they even don't know google webmaster tools or SEO but this is serious problem!!!
My all collection pages indexed by Google and none of my product pages indexed!! I contacted Shopify customer service. They even didn't know this problem so they passed me to technical service. Probably they just ignore the problem like they have been ignoring since 2016 !!!!
