Google Shopping - custom labels on variants

Hi

I have multi variant products and use google shopping to advertise.

I want to utilise custom labels, but I can only set custom labels at the product level, not at the variant level.

So I am unable to control bidding on variants.

Has anyone else resolved this - namely being able to set google shopping custom labels at the variant level?

Thanks

Will

That sounds correct, you have the option to use feed rules in Google Merchant Center : https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7450276?hl=en

You can also add supplement feeds : https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7439058?hl=en

Or if you want to have more editing power at source, consider other feed supply solutions.

Yes I know I can manage the data elsewhere and feed into google via various means, but then what is the point in the Shopify solution? I don't want to manage my data in two places. Annoying!

Every tool has positives and negatives. Not all tools are equal or offer a solution to everyone's needs.

If you are unhappy, simply contact Shopify and provide constructive feedback.

Hope this helps.

Being able to control simple ecommerce data in a product marketed as a solution to control ecommerce data would seem an obvious requirement. Why offer a variant solution if it is not implemented correctly.

But yes I will leave feedback. The google shopping app is deficient in many areas.

Your response is highly patronising btw and offers no insight.  You might want to work on that.

I'm being helpful to find a solution, I offered 3 ways to fix the issue. Please note I am a community member and not a Shopify employee.

And because you complained about a Shopify tool, I explained the best action to get Shopify to update their tool. And explained the realities of tools. It's impossible to have a tool being perfect. But if you like to see a tool improve itself, submitting feedback is the best way.

If you feel this is patronizing, it is not my intention and simply answered without beating around the bush.

So I think your comment was based on assuming I am a Shopify employee, which I'm not. I provided solutions with guides that you can follow. IE: how to resolve the issue and complete your goals.

If your comment regarding offering no insight is not answered, could you explain what you are talking about. I am happy to provide more guidance as I specialize in Google Ads and Shopping.

In any case, I hope you find the 3 methods helpful in resolving your current issues. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Happy to guide you.

Hi @willJones

As already mentioned you can set custom labels for product variants if you use a feed management platform, assuming you pull eacg variant as a separate product into the feed.  This is what I do as standard for exactly that reason - there are pros and cons but I do find overall I prefer being able to control each variant.

Re having to manage data in two places that's not an issue - any changes you make in Shopify will automatically be updated in the feed.   The only thing you may have to do if you make a lot of major changes or change prices is do a manual update of the feed to refresh it and keep it synced, which is nothing more than hitting button 🙂

By the way I use Data Feed Watch - I'm not affiliated or anything, it's what I'm used to and have used for a while and find it very easy to use and set up with Shopify.  Their support is also excellent and very responsive and they do a setup service for I think £99 which is a no-brainer if you don't have the time to do it yourself.

Hope that helps?

Sara

HI Emmanuel Me again thanks for all your help mate. is there a way to get the custom label at the variant level using a feed rule ? Basically i was able to find a way to bulk edit the custom label 0 field by opening products and selecting the products i want to edit and opening the bulk editor and adding this to the url metafields.google.custom_label_0. it opened it up at the product level and i added the value for custom label 0 but now in GMC its not showing. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

RJ

I have noticed for a year+ that the free shopping app has bugs with regards to submitting data. The one that is common is where the barcodes when added are not submitted to Google Merchant Center.

And I assume what you are trying to do, is a similar issue, where the app is just not updating.

When you go back to your edits, is it still there? Or did it disappear?

Based on what are your custom labels? As you might find it easier to setup feed rules directly in GMC, instead.

Yes shopify probably not sending especially because its set at the product level and not variant level the script is probably not set to check if that data exists at the product level to send it along with the variant details.

yes they are present upon refresh and browser close and open again.

That means i have to read through each product look it up and then match by title or item id and manually add that information. Theres gotta be an easier way but im just so frustrated as i spent time learning how to do the custom label hack to bulk enter the data that i cannot think of one. If you or anyone has been thru this and have a fix please let me know.

thanks

RJ

As your issue is technical in nature and you have verified the data is present in Shopify but not in GMC.

Then either contact Shopify support, or use an app that is better, such as: https://apps.shopify.com/multiple-google-shopping-feeds
