How can I alert customers about the minimum spend for discount codes?

We often create Buy X Get Y Free discount types. The minimum purchase is $50.

If a customer coming in organically adds products to their cart and only has let’s say $30 at the time of checkout, is there a way to alert them to tell them how much more they need to spend to use the free discount?

Here is a scenario.

The customer comes to the website organically and starts shopping.
They add products to the shopping cart for a total of  $30.00
They click checkout and at that moment they get a message with the discount code telling them if they spend $20 more they can apply the code to get free "Y"

Is this possible?
