How can I use HTML email templates on Shopify?

I’m looking for advice on how to use custom HTML email templates for my Shopify store. I’ve designed a few email templates in HTML and I’d like to integrate them into my Shopify email marketing campaigns.

Specifically, I’d love to know:

1. How can I upload and implement my custom HTML email templates within Shopify’s email system?
2. Are there any best practices or limitations I should be aware of when using custom HTML in Shopify emails?
3. Is it possible to customize Shopify’s automated emails (order confirmations, abandoned cart reminders, etc.) with my own HTML templates?

Any tips or resources on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Have you considered using a tool like Klaviyo instead? You could replace all Shopify notification emails with Klaviyo emails. I'm asking as you can indeed modify the templates with custom code, but email templates are a nightmare to deal with, so it will be a bit hard not only to implement but also to maintain.

If you still want to do it:

1. You can go to "settings > notifications", and there you can modify any email template you want with your code.

2. Generally speaking email templates should be as simple as you can make them. Email clients usually render them differently if you use complex CSS rules and if they weigh more than around 100KB, some email clients like Gmail crop them.

3. Yes, you can customize them as much as you want. You have access to a special set of variables on each email notification you can use: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/notifications/email-variables

Hi, thank you for your recommendation. Klaviyo will not resolve my doubt. Let me try to explain further. I use the email builder Postcards email builder, where I design my email templates and can download the HTML of these templates.

So, my question is: how do I insert the HTML into Shopify?

Got you. In that case, you can go to "Settings > Notifications", and there you can modify any notification email

eg:

If you want to modify the order confirmation email, go to "settings > notifications > customer notifications"

And then select the "order confirmation". In the next screen, click on "edit code", and you'll have a big input where you can make all your code changes.

Careful with terminology to avoid mixing different systems into overlapping questions which will create confusion

There are shopify admin notifications(no app needed) , shopify-email app , shopify-inbox app, etc.

1. Shopify-Email customization, read the friendly manual, https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-email/create-email/c...  https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-email/create-email/c... , to be clear shopify's admin does NOT have a formal "email system" built in with server level control ; i.e. email exchange. There are only "Shopify Email campaigns", or  notification templates which are liquid/html based and require manual editing to add/replace code. Shopify-email is it's own addin in, as is 
2. 💣html for emails IS NOT anything like the html that would be used for a website, be informed and research carefully how to make designs for email and test thoroughly; you have been warned.
