How to resolve domain and migration issues with my ecommerce?

Hello, I've recently started a free trial on Shopify and I have an e-commerce (on Woocommerce) that I'd like to migrate. I wanted to ask a couple of questions regarding the issue. First regards the domain. Apparently I've been assigned a domain but I cannot either modify it and I'm not even sure it's a fully working domain (as I've not paid for it). Any heads up on this?
In the second place, I'd like to know if I connect my third-party domain from my e-commerce, modifying the CNAME and A record to Shopify ones, It will affect the e-commerce website itself.

Thanks everybody in advance,
Gabriel

Hi @GabrielP1,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I'm happy to provide some assistance with this request, to ensure it gets resolved.

When you first signed-up for Shopify, your online shop was given a myshopify.com URL by default. This is likely the domain that you're referring to and is used for internal purposes. Due to this, you can certainly change the web address that's displayed to customers while they browse your online store to a custom domain.

As you've mentioned that you already have a third-party domain, I'd encourage you to check out our Connecting Third-Party Domains document for steps on how to successfully connect it to the shop. Prior to connecting your domain however, you will want to confirm that the DNS Records are correctly pointing to Shopify.

These DNS Records include:

  • Point the A record to the Shopify IP address 23.227.38.65.
  • If necessary, change the Host name to the @ symbol.
  • Delete any other A records on the domain if there are any present.
  • Point the CNAME record with the name www to shops.myshopify.com

If you're having trouble locating where to make those adjustments, you can connect with your domain provider directly as they will be able to provide further assistance. Once successfully completed, you can then connect the domain to the Shopify admin. To acheive this, you can:

  • Head to Settings > Domains, from the Shopify admin.
  • Click Connect existing domain.
  • Enter your domain, such as johns-apparel.info, and then click Next.
  • To confirm that your domain is connected to your Shopify store, click Verify connection.

It's important to note that it might take up to 48 hours for your domain to be verified. After it's verified, your domain is listed in the THIRD-PARTY DOMAINS section of the Domains page with the status Connected.

To learn more about domains, I'd encourage you to check out our Domains document as it touches on this further.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
