How to set up a welcome email automation for first time buyers?

Hi, I'm trying to set up an automation using Shopify that sends a first time purchaser a welcome email. If I start the automation using Customer created i then can't access Order object conditions to say they've actually ordered. If I start with Order created, even thought the First Purchase Upsell template has a condition using Order.customer.numberOfOrders I can't access that in a custom automation. Ideally, I want to be able to say eg Order created - check if it's the first order and check if the customer is subscribed then send X email. But I'm struggling to use the automation workflow to make that happen. And ideas that don't use another flipping app?
