SEO, AdWords, affiliates, advertising, and promotions
Hi,
Recently I see a customer account was created (email address, customer address etc) but not subscribed to marketing.
They have not abandoned cart so just wondering how they created the account = in the notes it says 'Online Store created this customer'
Thanks
Hi there, @Neil1981!
I'm happy to help. If you log into your Shopify admin and navigate to Settings > Checkout and scroll down to the Customer accounts section, are customer accounts set to required, optional, or disabled?
If they are set to optional or required, the customer is able to create an account themselves, without going through the checkout first. Typically, when this setting is enabled, there will be a button on your theme that visitors can click on to create an account. This is what it looks like on my test store:
When someone clicks on that icon, they are brought to this page to log in or create an account:
If the customer account wasn't created by you or by an abandoned cart, they likely created it themselves! You can read all about this in our help document on customer accounts.
Let me know if you have any further questions!

Thanks so much Greta,
I've the customer account option set as disabled as per below so I'm really not sure how the account/record was created? Any other ideas?
Hey, @Neil1981!
Thank you for getting back to me — that is definitely strange. Would you be able to share your website URL here and I'll take a look to see if I can make an account? I definitely want to help you get to the bottom of this!

Hey, @Neil1981.
It's my pleasure!
I did some digging on your site and I wasn't able to find any place that I would be able to create an account (besides signing up for the email list, which we've ruled out since this customer isn't subscribed to marketing).
One possibility is that the customer entered in their information at the first stage of checkout, but didn't press Continue to Shipping. An abandoned checkout is only created when the customer enters in their information and clicks through to the next step of checkout. Perhaps they entered in their name and address which was saved in the system, but a corresponding abandoned checkout wasn't created, hence the discrepancy.
Besides that possibility, I'm honestly not sure what else could have happened there! I'm not able to provide account-specific support through the Community (as in, I'm not able to access the back end of your store) so I wouldn't be able to investigate further, but if you did want to look into this more, you could get in touch with our live Support team through the Help Center. We're available around the clock via live chat, callback, and email!
Thank you again for working with me on this, and if there's anything else you'd like me to take a look at, just let me know and I'd be happy to.
