How well does text-based marketing work?

Has anyone done text-based marketing? My friend used this service called Neo (askneo.io) for Black Friday and said he generated 200x incremental sales for every $1 he spent on text-based marketing. Given that traditional marketing is challenging in this environment, I'm thinking of trying this but wanted to see if there are other similar success stories out there.
