SEO, AdWords, affiliates, advertising, and promotions
If I have my store running on domain1.com, I know I can add domain2.com to my account and set it as primary and have everything 301 redirect and be happy. But what happens if after moving to domain2.com, I restructure some products that still have backlinks? I know normally shopify allows you to create redirects to capture that traffic but what happens when you go across domains?
Ill give an example. Let's say you had a lot of backlinks to domain1.com/products/my-awesome-product but now that youve switched to the new domain the equivalent product is now located at domain2.com/products/my-awesome-product-gen-2. Then lets say I setup a shopfy redirect from /products/my-awesome-product to /products/my-awesome-product-gen-2. Will this work?
Thanks
Jason
Hey, Jason!
My name is Alex, I'm a guru here at Shopify!
No problem! When you're going from domain to domain, that's all handled automatically - the important part of the address within your store is the handle, so there's no manual redirect required from you at all if you're going from domain1.com to domain2.com. The only time you'll need to do an actual redirect manually is when you change the handle, i.e., go from /my-awesome-product to /my-awesome-product-gen-2 - there's more info available in our doc on redirects right over here! So long as the old page no longer exists and would result in a 404 if your customer navigates there, a redirect will work here - here's what the format should be:
Old Path
/products/my-awesome-product
New Path
https://www.domain2.com/products/my-awesome-product-gen-2
Hope that's helped! Please feel free to give us a call or start a live chat at any time, we're open 24/7 for your convenience and always happy to assist!

Hi Jason-
Were you able to resolve this issue? The response from shopify only works within the same domain. I am having the same problem- 301 redirects for crossing domains.
Thanks so much for your help,
Rita
