Hoping to convert my brick and mortar retail store to an e-commerce store on Shopify along with the physical store.

Currently my transaction fee on credit card and ATM card is 1.8%. With Shopify I am not sure if I can keep the transaction fee  down to that. I believe its 2.9%+30Cents

Mostly I am expecting most sales to continue as POS with customers coming into my store.

I do my advertisement thro' social media like Instagram,

Ii I  have people e-transfer me payments - in that case  I believe there is no transaction fee and can have Shopify do the inventory management.

Needed advise if its worth going to Shopify.

Hey @shailprit

Moving your brick and mortar retail store to an e-commerce platform like Shopify can offer numerous benefits. Here are some factors to consider regarding transaction fees and whether it's worth transitioning to Shopify:

  1. Transaction fees: Shopify offers different pricing plans, and transaction fees vary based on the plan you choose. The standard transaction fee for online credit card payments on the Basic Shopify plan is 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction. However, if you opt for the Shopify plan or higher-level plans, the transaction fees can be reduced to 2.6%, 2.4%, or even 2.2% respectively. It's important to review Shopify's pricing plans to determine which one aligns best with your needs and budget.

  2. Point of Sale (POS) transactions: With Shopify, you can seamlessly integrate your physical store and online store, enabling you to manage both in one place. Shopify provides a POS system that allows you to process sales, manage inventory, and track customer data. For in-person transactions at your brick and mortar store, the transaction fee is lower compared to online transactions. The transaction fee for POS transactions varies depending on your pricing plan, but it can be as low as 2.4% + 0 cents per transaction on the higher-level plans.

  3. E-transfer payments: If you receive payments via e-transfer or other offline methods outside of Shopify's payment gateway, such as direct bank transfers, there won't be any transaction fees imposed by Shopify. However, you may need to manually update inventory and order information in Shopify for these transactions.

  4. Inventory management and social media integration: Shopify provides robust inventory management features that can help streamline your operations, whether online or in-store. You can track inventory levels, receive notifications for low stock, and manage products centrally. Additionally, Shopify integrates well with social media platforms like Instagram, allowing you to showcase and sell products directly through your social media channels.

Consider the following steps to make an informed decision:

  • Analyze your current sales channels: Evaluate the proportion of sales that currently happen in-store versus online. If the majority of your sales still occur in-person, Shopify's POS capabilities can be beneficial for managing inventory and providing a unified view of your business.
  • Calculate potential savings: Compare your current transaction fees with Shopify's fees based on your estimated online sales volume. Determine whether the potential increase in transaction fees would be offset by the convenience and benefits offered by Shopify's e-commerce platform.
  • Assess overall cost and benefits: Consider other factors like website design, security, customer support, and scalability that Shopify provides. These aspects contribute to the overall value and long-term benefits of using Shopify as your e-commerce platform.

Ultimately, the decision to transition to Shopify should be based on a comprehensive analysis of your specific business needs, sales channels, and cost considerations. It can be helpful to consult with an e-commerce specialist or reach out to Shopify's customer support to discuss your specific requirements and get personalized guidance.
