Need answer on how to discount

I am trying to discount 3 items for a specific group of people.  How can I apply the discount so that ONLY that group of people can get it AND apply it to ONLY 3 items and not the entire cart.  I know how to create a discount code, but that will discount the whole cart and I only want to discount the 3 specific products.  Any one know if this is possible?

You're absolutely on the right track. As you're creating your discount code in your admin, you can limit its eligibility to both specific products and customers. 

You can double-check that you've selected the appropriate settings by referring to the Summary located on the right-hand side of your discount page. A couple other things to note:

• To apply the discount code to their cart, your customer will need to enter the same email address listed on your discount page - otherwise they'll be met with an error letting them know their cart is not eligible to use the code at this time. 
• The discount will only apply to items you've indicated - all other prices should remain unaffected.
