New subscribers arent receiving their confirmation or welcome email

In my notifications, the automated emails are working for orders and shipping. However when a customer subscribes via pop up box on our website, they do not get sent the automated emails. They appear as a new customer and I can send these emails manually, but I would like the new customer to trigger the emails. How can i do this? It appears that it is set up, but not working.
