Organic Google sessions dropped off a cliff after theme change

I recently changed my store theme and have noticed that referrals from Google organic have dropped off a cliff.

My page speed is marginally faster since the update and my collection URL's have remained the same.


Is there any insight from the experts here that might help me on my way to regaining those lost Google sessions?

I would suggest looking at: 

  1. Which specific pages dropped the most in GA / GSC
  2. What changed on those pages? Title, H1, Subheadings, Onpage heading structure, onpage text content displayed. Schema per page.
  3. In GSC what keywords changed the most for each of those pages. Does that corelate with the changes to 2? 
  4. I assume none of the URLs changed much? If they did consider changing back.

If there's anything obvious content-wise that the theme change affected, work towards undoing those specific changes, or re-introducing the naming/content that was previously working well. 


Hopefully you have the old theme still available to be switched to for an hour or so, this can give you a simple way to check the differences before/after (2) to help to get clues if there is anything obvious that changed.
