Question regarding discount code

I am trying to setup a discount for a "free dessert" promotion In my store. The promotion is... Sign up to my newsletter and get a free dessert on your first order over $50. I setup a dessert product and made it active that I intend to use as the promo. Name is "surprise dessert" - it is completely filled out and active in my store. Then I created a discount code "DESSERT50" with a Buy X Get Y condition as follows...

  • Minimum purchase of $50
  • Specific collections: Selected all of my collections, so that any product is eligible
  • Customer gets 1 qty - specific product - Surprise Dessert - FREE
  • 1 use per order
  • Everyone is eligible
  • 1 use per customer
  • No end date

Everything I assume is setup correctly. If someone knows the code "DESSERT50" which they'd get in an email after signing up for my newsletter during this promotion. They then come and place an order over $50 with any products... Insert code, it should add the surprise dessert and make it free.

When testing this it failed. I entered the discount code during checkout and it said that the products in my cart aren't eligible for the discount code.

Please help.

Cheers,

Aaron

Hey @THS-Aaron,

We did a video on creating discount codes, it's very thorough so I'd recommend taking a look and seeing if there's something you missed:

You're missing one part that doesn't seem very intuitive to me at least. When you apply a buy X get Y coupon, that only works if already added both X and Y to your cart, before applying the coupon. It would then apply the discount to the price of Y.

If you want the item to be automatically added to the cart, you'll either have to write some code yourself to achieve that or install one of the apps which add free items to the cart.
