SEO, AdWords, affiliates, advertising, and promotions
I've been researching Shopify Email as a potential alternative to using MailChimp. However, I was hoping to be able to segment my customers by a product TYPE they've purchased, or by a vendor type they purchased. I see that I can create a segment for specific individual products they've purchased, but I couldn't find any way to segment by product TYPE purchased (the class of product.) Single products are way too narrow for what I'm hoping to do. This is the only thing holding me back from switching to Shopify Email. Any help or workaround ideas are greatly appreciated!
Hey @CozyCampfire
I believe AdScale can be a great solution to the issue you're experiencing.
Using AdScale, you can easily create product segments based on the product type, vendor, tag, and more!
You can then target customers who've purchased products from these segments using Email and SMS campaigns.
You can also target those same customers through Google and Facebook, all from one app.
It offers a 14-day free trial, so you can try it out to see if it fits your marketing needs.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
Hope this helped!
Your best bet would be to use an email marketing software like Drip. Shopify email isn't as featureful since their focus isn't entirely on email marketing.
Drip totally supports segmenting your customers by what product types, tags, vendors, and more that they've purchased.
Hey @CozyCampfire
You can use ShopifyEmail for this, but you would need to use tags instead of types.
The segment would look like this:
products_purchased(tag: 'Vintage') = true
but the nice thing is that you can get all products tagged this way, no need to enter individual products.
Hope this helps!

Hi - am trying to do the same thing, but using the Tags function is not working. I have maybe 5 distinct Product Categories - I don't want to market Category A type products to a customer who only ever buys Category B type products, as it's irrelevant and I'll just annoy them. I'm trying to build a customer segment for all customers who have previously bought Category A products - following all the steps, and I end up with a complete mish-mash of customers across all product categories. Can anyone help? Is this doable within Shopify (would have thought by Category would not be that tall an order?). Thanks
