Get rid of any duplication. Make sure you write all your own product descriptions. Dont use the product description everyone else uses.

Hi Lynn,

My advice is not to think to much about SEO and focus more on building an easy to use website and build trust with potential customers.

A few things that have worked for us are:

  1. Try to make sure that you have a detailed "About us" page
  2. Display your shipping costs early on i.e. Homepage
  3. Display your returns policy
  4. Use a one page cart
  5. Install an abandoned cart App
  6. Install a live chat App
  7. Build a strong social media presence
  8. Update your Blog at least once every two weeks

The list could go on and on!

Hope this helps, good luck

Paul

HI Lynn

I will write my advice for you and other store owners who are struggling with SEO for their store.

SEO comes down to these three essentials:

- Technique of your store
- On-page factors
- External factors

Technique
The technique is mostly handled by Shopify so I wouldn't worry to much about that. There are some basic things you need to check like; does my shop has ssl? if so do you handle redirects. If you are not technical you can have a consultant take a look at it and make sure your website is up to the best SEO standards.

External factors
These ranking factors influence your store but are external. If you have ever heard of terms like: backlinks, social media influence etc. These are external factors. Google suggests getting backlinks (links from other websites to your store) on a natural basis. You could try getting backlinks by contacting blogs / experts etc. for product reviews or unique contests. Just don't overdo it, you can easily do this yourself and that is often the best for building good relationships with other (blog) businessess.

On-page factors
The last factor that you as a store owner can control the most are the on-page factors. On-page includes: the content, meta description, meta title, image names, images al texts, internal links, etc.

The best way to do on-page optimization by the next simplified plan:

  1. Log-in AdWords and use the keyword tool to find keywords with interesting search volume and not to much competition
  2. Optimize your content for that keyword

Without trying to praise our app to much, but the ReloadSEO app really helps you with all your on-page factors. You can do keyword research in our app although I still recommend to do your major research in the AdWords tool because you can see the search volume. After you've done your keyword research you can enter a keyword in our app for each page/collection/product/blog etc. and it will give you instantly feedback on how good your page is optimized for that keyword and what you need to do to optimize it even better!

Don't forget, basic SEO isn't that hard. Search engines reward the thing that is most difficult to fake: unique content that adds value.  Writing this content takes a very long time and most store owners don't put in that much effort for their content. Imagine where your store is going to be in 3 years if you start writing one good article every day from now on!

As they say, content is king. meaning good discriptions, good imagry etc. next would be backlinks, other websites linking to you that have related content. don't have a bunch of link sites linking to you or it will kill your rankings.

There are lots of factors here. ReloadSEO has some great points in his post already, but lets simplify it...

FIRST AND FOREMOST - SEO IS NOT OVERNIGHT! Good and proper SEO will take time. On average if you are just starting don't expect immediate results, and DONT trust any company that says you will be at the top of google in 1 month. This may be true, but in the future it will be based on tricks that don't have life too them.

1. You need a page with information (content) that uses the words on it you want to be found for

2. It is important that these same words are found in the SEO Title, description, and handle of those pages

3. This often means that you will need things, or to setup products in a way that you didn't think about before.

4. Ensure that you aren't using your feelings but statistics to track your SEO (connect to Google Analytics, and Google Search console, bing webmaster etc)

5. Remember that EVERY marketing activity will play a part in your SEO... the idea is to drive traffic to your site, and keep them there (Visitors, Time on Site, BounceRate, etc all play a HUGE part in SEO). A simple trick used by many of my customers is on their business cards. If you put a contact form on the site, and show your phone number... why does your business card need that info? Drive them to the stie

6. Http vs Https is a big thing to consider... BUT shopify is working on that and making this aspect easier in the near future

7. Blog, Blog, Blog... this is the easiest way to ensure you have engaging content using your keywords without interrupting the shoping experience of the customers

8. Don't hesitate to create content that is not linked to your navigation (collections of products with titles and descriptions using words you want to be found for don't have to be in the navigation (although it helps))

9. Your theme will play a big part... not every theme handles SEO coding in the same way... some ARE better than others

10. Page speed - Remember that page speed will play a part in your SEO efforts. This means that you need to be cautious of image sizes, and other aspects that may cause your page to be slow...

Lots of tips here... but the best one is to hire someone to help you do a reveiw, build a strategy, and implement from there.
