How can I make the URL of my Shopify product to other foreign language ? Currently, I found that it only support English URL only.
Nick here from Shopify.
The URL's assigned to your products by the Shopify system are required to be that way for your store's liquid to work correctly. We don't allow modifications to the URL's structure for that reason.
Thanks for reaching out 🙂
I didn't mean the URL strucutre. I meant the product URL in the field "Product and Handles" such as
https://www.thaidiycupcake.com/products/cupcakewrappers1 . Can I change cupcakewrappers1 to Thai langauge for better result display in google ?
The handles will need to use the English alphabet. The Thai abugida isn't supported.
You can translate your Shopify store including your URLs with GTranslate https://apps.shopify.com/multilingual-shop-by-gtranslate (URL translation feature available in the paid version).
Here is a Shopify store with GTranslate: https://www.mimiholliday.com
@JohnHolmes Sorry, I have just realized that the mentioned website does not have our URL Translation feature.
I cannot share any other Shopify stores which use GTranslate for privacy reasons, but you can check our own website https://gtranslate.io/ to check how URLs are also translated. It is not based on Shopify, but it does not matter.
Maybe they think we are stupid or something...We NEED to be able to translate the slugs! Otherwise it's useless for SEO.
SEO expert here...
You are now able to translate Shopify's slugs to many languages. I don't know what the limitations are right now if there are any.
However, if you have multiple stores, you will kick your SEO in the bum doing this because your hreflang tags will become an absolute mess leading to 404s. To solve this, you can use multi-store hreflang tags then map your stores together.
How do you mean that Shopify is now able to translate slugs to many languages? I have my Shopify site set to danish as primary language, but it doesn't translate the slugs to danish. E.g. collections in danish is "kollektioner" but Shopify makes my url in english "collections". Is it possible to change this, so that I can have danish urls?
I'm using the GTranslate app, but they can't translate the original urls into danish. They will only be able to translate the original urls - if they were actually in danish - bilingually into e.g. english.
The "pages" and "collections" portion of the URL isn't translated. The URL handles after that can be. That is the poster's original question.
@CCJensen82, you are right, Shopify itself still doesn’t translate URLs. And you can’t translate such routs as “/collection/” “/product/“ and “/blog/“ because of Shopify structure.
However, you can visit Shopify App Store and find an app that connects the products/collections/pages/blogs/articles with different slugs between international stores.
@JohnHolmes, this might be useful for you. Such apps link the stores with hreflang tags. That will help you use the translations in slugs for each particular store, avoid penalties for duplicated content, and will be useful for SEO.
As Josh mentioned earlier, some apps may help you deal with the hreflangs. You can check the Hreflang Manager app that was created to resolve such struggles with SEO for international stores.
Can you suggest an app that does this? I mean, translate slugs. Weglot seems to only do this for WordPress stores and their trial is only for the pro plan, so I cannot test without purchasing the advanced plan for 2,000 Eur. Langify also does not support this.
Thanks for your input.
