tracking of add_to_cart form in product page

Hey everybody,

I'm keeping track regularly after my conversions and customers and have noticed something weird.

I'm using GA4 and the native shopify analytics. In both there is a record of a few add_to_cart events.

In my GA4 analytics, besides those few add_to_cart events, I'm seeing visitors on product pages activating theform_start event. The form_destination value of those events is - https://my_website_domain/cart/add and the form_id value starts with "AddToCartForm...". In the sessions I'm seeing these events, there are no typical add_to_cart events.

I'm suspecting those forms are add_to_cart events shopify and google are missing for some reason. Anyone knows anything about it or can clarify about the add_to_cart forms?

Thanks a lot,

Tomer

It's possible that the form_start events you're seeing in your GA4 analytics are related to add-to-cart actions on your website. Shopify's native analytics and Google Analytics may miss some add-to-cart events due to technical limitations or tracking issues.

To get a better understanding of the issue, you should check if the AddToCartForm is the only form on your product pages that triggers the form_start event. You can also try debugging your website's tracking code to see if there are any errors or missing data.

In the meantime, you can use the information from your GA4 analytics to track your add-to-cart events more accurately. You can also consider using a third-party analytics tool or app to complement Shopify's native analytics.

I hope this helps!

Hey Hassan, thanks for that.

It is the only addtocartform on my product page but not the only form. Since I'm seeing addtocartform event there, it must be this specific form.

Is it possible it is firing without any human action?

my GA4 and shopify analytics are in sync - they have the same events. If some addtocart events are missing, they are missing from both.

Is it possible?

To your information, if I define the addtocart event through google tag manager, should I expect this problem to be solved (at least on GA4)?

thanks,

Tomer

Hi Tomer,

It's unlikely that the AddToCartForm event is firing without any human action, but it's not impossible. It's possible that there are automated scripts or bots on your website that are triggering the event.

If your GA4 and Shopify analytics are in sync and both are missing some add-to-cart events, then it's possible that there are tracking issues that are causing the events to be missed.

Defining the add-to-cart event through Google Tag Manager can help to ensure that the event is tracked consistently across all pages and devices, and can potentially help to address the tracking issue you're experiencing. However, it's important to make sure that your GTM setup is correct and that the tags are firing as intended.

Here are some resources that may help you set up your add-to-cart event tracking in GTM:

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.
