Who's had success driving traffic with FB / IG ads?

Hello Shopify-ers!

I launched my store www.smallbatchdaily.com in October (artisan, American-made gourmet foods) and have had decent sales but I'm not generating a lot of traffic to my site. I'm starting to convince myself that the only way to do this will be through using Facebook and Instagram ads. I've tried them out but have had very little engagement (only a handful of click-throughs). The content I think is good but I haven't put a lot of money against them which could be part of the issue. I'm nervous to without having a better handle on what results it'll drive!

I'd love to hear from anyone who's had success driving traffic with social ads and any tips you have for a newbie.

Thanks! Emily

Hi Emily,

May I ask how you are targeting your audience for the ads? Please be very specific.

We've had success with Kit. It's a good way to start small with ads and get some initial sales and move on

Hi Emily! Maggie, a Shopify Partner here 🙂

While it's true that you have to use social media marketing in order to improve traffic, yet paid ads is not the only way. This forum is full of posts from people who keep spending money on adds, and seeing traffic, but still no sales. Why? Because the ads are not optimized to reach their target audience at the right moment of the buying process.

Social media marketing can bring you more relevant traffic, and it's absolutely free. Consider posting daily on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Read how to organize a content, how to engage with followers and have a strong strategy on at least one profile.

SEO can also help you with traffic, but you will see better results with SEO project once your website is established [2+ years old].

Hello Emily, great work with your store so far: very neat user interface and lovely, compelling images. I do agree that eventually web traffic will convert visitors to customers and finally leads to more sales. You currently lack the social media icons on your footer and header though. Organically, social media can drive lots of traffic to your store and also help create and enhance your brand awareness. Not forgetting the extra benefit that social media does with the SEO of your store. You are currently on Instagram and I will encourage you to consider facebook and Pinterest. Also, make the social icons easily accessible by placing it on either your header or footer of your store.
Also consider retargeting to the users who have already visited your store. I will highly recommend AdGeek for this purpose. This free facebook retargeting service handles all the pesky setup processes for you at NO COST. It is highly remarkable and their customer service team is ready to die for you.
I hope my comments helps as you pursue greatness, Emily.

Hey Emily,

I love the idea and your content is very good I think!

Your product could make a killing with Facebook ads since it is a relatively impulsive purchase and people on Facebook are generally not in a purchase mode unless they are "nurtured" enough. Try to make different campaigns with different objectives (one campaign where you just directly sell, one retargeting campaign, one campaign for your subscribers, etc). I will send you an email so you can be pointed in the right direction.

Hi Emily!

I've noticed that when I pay for ads on Facebook, it doesn't necessarily drive sales but it does bring "likes" to my page. With Facebook, its pay to play all the way. I haven't found much success with it, other than to boost my "likes".

I mainly drive sales through Instagram, but it's not through ads. I am constantly partnering with bloggers...sending them product to review and collaborating with giveaways. This is the business model I've been using since I started my company 5 years ago, and it's still working to this day!

I checked out your site and it's great. I'm not sure if I'm the only one having this issue, but when I click on "Shop" in the menu bar, I'm unable to click on the drop down menu. It disappears when I scroll my mouse over it. Just thought I'd let you know.

Good luck with everything!

Hey Emily,

I grew Naturebox from $0 in Facebook spend to 7 figures in spend (profitably), and your product/market is similar, so there is hope.

First and foremost, you need to build a foundation in your account so you can test and learn quickly. I recommend you read the Facebook Blueprint for starters.

I teach a 4 hour class on this and could go on for longer, so do you have a more specific question I could help with? Feel free to reach out through my company site at Metric Digital.

Thanks,

Kevin

I love your website, our sales from the website are not that great but once in a while we will be suprised with orders!

Have you tried collborations? cross marketing? it's free and fun to connect with like minded people.

Hi,

I visited your landing page and was confused. It looks very visually appealing but when I scroll down I see a tutorial which tells me to like you on ig and comment sold on a posting? I'm confused, don't want to check your instagram and leave the site.

This will not increase your traffic but I think you should change something on the landing page to drive more sales. Feature some products or a collection so I understand what you are sellung right away.

Best,

Dominic

I have had success with paid Facebook ads but only when I got the targeting figured out. Google Trends has been the best tool in my experience for figuring out exactly where to target my paid Facebook ads to get the best return but as others have said the biggest benefit for them isn't direct sales but more social exposure, people liking and sharing my posts which inevitably leads to traffic and sales indirectly.

As for Instagram ads I don't bother with them as in my experience it is much, much simpler to just target your posts with hashtags and reach people much more effectively, quickly, and best of all free.

I have used pretty much every ad platform out there at this point so if you ever want to chat about the subject I'm more than happy to help 🙂

I have had hit and miss experience on social networks and certainly not made a ROI.
But as some one pointed out... great for brand awareness, all goes into the cunsumers minds.

I do affiliate marketing as my day job and 80% of my sales come via this route and now my seo is kicking in too. So suggest you look into opening up an affiliate program.

Hey Maggie, don't buy into all the folks trying to sell you social media guru packages. If you are already a face book and Instagram user you have the power to do this yourself, make posts and target the audience you are seeking. This will convert into sales. And it will be Representative of you and your products. Facebook ads are great you can test keywords and markets for only a few dollars to see what gets a reaction and what doesn't. Geo targeting is key. We use FB for our retail store and our online business. School yourself on facebook and don't go crazy spending money. Throw $5 to $20 on testing ad ideas. When you find something that proves to work in driving traffic then do more. Video ads work best for us and drive traffic. Instagram is new for us but seems to be getting a fair bit of reaction. Still getting a handle on it. But hash tags are key with Instagram. And since you can post simultaneously to FB, twitter, and a multitude of other platforms from Instagram, it seems this will be our go to platform in the near future. Good luck. Try new things, be you. - Steve

Hi Maggie, Your site looks absolutely attractive!  I will suggest a split A/B test for all your paid advertising.  For example, change up some wording, call to action, image.  Do test them one at a time, so you will be able to see the individual effects of how the audience is reacting to your ads.

I've seen the most success with two very specific types of Facebook ads.

First is a content marketing approach.  Use Shopify's built in blogging features to create an image heavy post that talks about trends or activities that relate to your products.  Then provide product pictures and purchase links within the blog post.  Run an engagement ad for likes and shares.  If you start getting a lot of likes and shares, you will then get cheaper clicks.  And if your blog post is written well it will act as pre-sell copy which will help increase conversions.  Lowering CPC and increasing conversions is a winning combination.

The other is Free + Shipping with a $5.95 or less shipping price.  This is essentially an effective list building tool, not much in the profit margin area.  But effective nonetheless.  The money is in the list.

I have had more luck with Pinterest free pins. We use to run ads on FaceBook but never got a sale or lead from a ad just likes. We find the free groups get people in our store.

I had my site now for 3 months and most of my sales come from my Facebook Fan page shop now link. But also I started learning the SEO and getting 75% sales from Google. I went through this Shopify course and I really noticed the sales come in. Worth going through. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0MX5OYpMJc&t=2791s

I also have very little traffic but my engagement is very good. The best results is setting up Facebook and Instagram retargeting ads. You will have to do some work to get the right tracking codes implemented but after you do you can target the few people who have been on your site on social media. That way they don't forget about you, and it increases their chance of conversion.

And the people I can get to come back to my site a second time are 3 times more likely to convert into a sale!
