Re: Tracking site visitors

Why are most of my site visitors showing a 0 second session length?

Hey, dear community members. I’ve recently started my shop and decided to go along with Snapchat ads (although previously I also worked with TikTok and META).

After the first 12 hours or so of the running ads, I decided to look into the statistics for the visitors, as I got no sales. I decided to open a “Sessions over Time” report and turned on the “Sessions” and “Average Session Duration” parameters in the columns.

Strangely, I noticed that from more than 200 visitors, only about two or three did at least any action on the website, such as going to another page, which resulted in a session length of more than 0 seconds. The other 197-198 visitors had an average session length of 0 seconds, which mathematically means they all had a 0 second session length.

The website is not under password, it is available online. The link provided to the SMM service (Snapchat) is also correct and directs viewers to the home page. I don’t ask you to judge neither the design nor the ad quality — those are quite subjective. Moreover, even with the poorest design and with the poorest ad creative, the session length would be at least 1.5-2 seconds, but it cannot be 0 for such a great amount of people. The loading speed at different devices in different countries does not exceed 2 seconds, which also means that such a great amount of people couldn’t have bounced off immediately.

My question is: where may the problem lie? Is it with Shopify incorrectly assessing the session length, or with Snapchat, not opening the website properly? Or maybe with something else? I can provide any more information in case it is needed for more profound evaluation.

PS: I know that a successful conversion rate depends on a variety of factors, but anyway the session length of 0 seconds for 99% customers seems to be not legit.

I stopped the ads after 12 hours of running, because of this issue. The statistics are from shopify reports, so these are website visitors, not just people who viewed the ad.

It sounds incorrect to me as well, but perhaps you can test it yourself? Ask a few people you know to visit your site via Snapchat and spend 5-10 mins there and than check if the average bounce rate improved
