How to build Checkout Extensions Pre-Purchase (not Post-Purchase)

You can customize Shopify checkout in a variety of ways. All customization options are portable, fast for merchants to install, and upgrade-safe, enabling merchants to continue getting platform benefits as Shopify releases new features.
But the documentation that follows only describes how to create a post-purchase extension, which is functionality shown after the credit card submission, just before the Thank You page.
Anyone here know more about how to extend functionality of the checkout page pre-purchase?
