Can apps clear all unused code from my Shopify website?

I found that after uninstalling the apps, the page will have a lot of unused code, affecting the speed of the page. Is there any apps that can clear all unused code of the website?

These are a few codes under "warning"

Hi Amit,

The message which is pretty much repeated throughout your log is a hot topic at the moment. Internet browsers are putting in stricter rules regarding cookies. Shopify knows about this and I think it was even talked about at the latest Shopify Unite web conference.

Basically app developers have to push an update out to fix it. I'm suprised PayPal haven't already done this, but maybe there's something else going on that I'm not privy to.

To summarise, that error won't slow your site down, but it will stop certain apps functioning in future Chrome versions.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @enigmaoptics,

Your site rates quite well. The main thing slowing it down (920ms) is just your theme’s stylesheet and a theme Javascript file, which are both essential.

You do have a failed Javascript request on every page I’ve looked at to this URL: ‘https://enigmaoptics.com/tools/about-js?version=1.0' though, I’m guessing the request is coming from within your theme somewhere, but I'm not sure specifically where.

I noticed that you’re currently in a pre-launch phase. If you want to start taking customer order commitments ahead of your stock arriving, the Shopify app I run can help (Payment links aren’t sent out to customers until you trigger them).

Hi @OliUK

Any advice on speeding up our load time and removing unwanted script would be super duper appreciated

Hi @Moonie,

Yep, sure. A couple of things:

• You’ve got large Instagram images slowing your page load. You’ve got ‘Lazy loading’ setup on the rest of your site images which is great (only loads when in view), but Google says that the Instagram images aren’t being ‘lazy loaded’.

• There are also some apps that are loading as your page loads, not after it (which is better for speed):
A sizing app, a product options app and the slowest: a pricing app

Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, consider reaching out to the developers, they’re probably happy to help.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi , can you help me see what causes my website to load too slowly? thank you very much.

Hi @LiuZihan

A group sales app downloads a large style sheet (it actually contains all of Shopify’s own stylesheet). It's more something you would use for the app in the dashboard, so I don’t know why it’s being requested on the front end. That takes 682ms to download.

Shopify also takes a little while, so that’s probably down to your theme.

There’s a huge code file downloaded from a multi-channel marketing app too.

Oli

Hey can you help me out?

Google gives me a 19 for loading speed, pretty terrible. I tried to change the gifs to videos and change the code to play them, but it doesn't work on my product page for some reason.

Any way I can increase my speed?

Hi @wmosburg

Your site actually loaded fast for me and I can see you’ve got lazy loading functionality setup (which is good).

Google doesn’t seem to like your first GIF, which is 2.4mb. It’s not displayed very large, so you could probably get away with halving the quality (there’s GIF optimisers online). On second thoughts, I think you might also have too higher frame rate, maybe try reducing it to 10 frames per second or similar. I’d expect you could get the file under 1mb.

Apart from the GIF, your site is pretty fast. Google thinks it slows down page load speed by 15 seconds, but your site loaded in under a second for me… I think there might be an error on Google’s end, it seems to be getting confused.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @jeanedbourque ,

The speed issues are really coming from your theme/page builder. It downloads two big Javascript libraries. So, not really something you can change whilst using that theme. Also, you have a tonne of images on your homepage. Consider removing a lot of them and adding: loading = 'lazy' to the <img> tags. I can't see any dynamic image requests when I click on a thumbnail, so I think the website is downloading all of these images for a single page view (at least the first time a user visits).

Good luck,

Oli

@OliUK Hi! You give some really clear insightful feedback on sites and I was wondering if you would mind checking mine out as well? https://mairobotics.com/. I'd love any thoughts on to improve the speed, as it is somewhere in the 20-30s right now according to google PageSpeed.

Hii @chazeichazy ,

Thanks for the kind words. Happy to have a quick look at your store.

Cool company by the way.
So, there is a request blocking the initial page load. It's a styling/CSS file that I think has been injected into your theme (slick.css). If you're still using the app referenced in the name (might also be the app developers name) I would make maybe contact with the developers and ask if the styling can either be loaded inline or async. Google claims it's blocking your page render by 0.76 seconds, which is pretty significant (if it's true).

I'd start with that, it's the biggest ticket item by far.

Good luck,

Oli

@OliUK thanks! I'm new to shopify development so I thought slick.css was a default file. Not sure if it was an app downloaded in the past, and I couldn't find the app named slick under Shopify's activity history so I'm likely to just remove the file. Regarding the other stuff, I'm seeing a lot of cdn.shopify.com and assumed this was uneditable code, but what does this mean exactly?

Would you be able to check my lazyloading as well by chance? I'm not sure why the images are blurry but i implemented it just like the guide here: https://speedboostr.com/shopify-lazy-loading/

OliUK
Shopify Partner
234 2 48

Hi @chazeichazy ,

Ah yep, maybe test removing it first, just in case it's got a more important job than we suspect.
So, the cdn.shopify requests are from Shopify's 'Content Delivery Network'. It's a way for requests to receive responses from the closest Shopify server (geographically).
But, as you mention, these are from your theme, so we shouldn't remove them.

Hmm, I think that guide might have been written before lazy loading was supported natively by most browsers. The easiest way to implement it would be to add

loading="lazy"

Good luck,

Oli

Hi @Sean67,

You’ve got a failed request to the GooglePay API on each page. Maybe coming from an app or your theme, I’m not quite sure.

There’s more of that situation where Google thinks your page takes a lot longer to load than it actually does (it claims 23 seconds till the sites interactive, where as I can interact in 2 seconds ish). Google also says that parsing your different Javascript snippets is taking 6.5 seconds, again, I’m not too sure about this. Here is a list of all of the Javascript processes that have to run before your page finishes:

Hi @shopdelrose,

No worries at all.

You’ve got a pixel loading from this URL: https://godog.shopifycloud.com/v1/event.gif?q=eyJuYW1lIjoic3BiLmluaXQuY2FsbGVkIiwidHlwZSI6ImluY3JlbW... but it’s only taking 150ms, so I don’t think it’s a huge issue, even though it’s pre- page load.

Your stylesheet takes a full second to load, so you could look at removing any unused code (tool in my previous post).

You’ve got some product recommendation images at the bottom of the page, I couldn’t see any ‘lazy loading’ functions i.e. the images only load when the viewer scrolls to see them. That could be another improvement you could make. The HTML property to add is:

loading = ‘lazy’

All in all, it's not a slow loading site though, especially for e-commerce.

Hope that helps,

Oli

Hi @IKS ,

I’ve just had a quick look.

There’s a request to a Google service I can’t identify that slows down your site more than anything else. All I know is it’s a Javascript file which I realise isn’t that helpful. Maybe it's coming from your store's theme if you're not using any Google-specific apps.

There’s a Facebook request (probably something to do with your pixel) that takes up some time too.

Hot Jar takes up a bit of time, so if you’re not using them, that might be something you could turn off as well.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @OliUK

Thanks for helping all of us here.

I am also struggling with the mobile performance of my website- https://mytextilestore.com/

Although I understand that it is slowing majorly due to facebook pixel and shopify js, how should I go about solving these issues? I have tried changing the code in almost every possible way. pls let me know if you have any other feedback/observation as well.

OliUK
Shopify Partner
234 2 48

Hi @Deepank

No worries at all.

I don’t really know how to optimise the shopify.js as that’s coming from your theme. Your stylesheet is taking 920ms to load though, which you could maybe optimise. Whilst it’s from your theme, there’s most likely a lot of unused CSS in there.

I actually just found this site that claims to show how much is of the stylesheet is in use. For your store, it says 50% of it is un-used and actually has an option to export an optimised version of your stylesheet (name of file: theme.scss.css). I've never tested it, but looks promising. Maybe try duplicating your theme and replacing the file as a test?

I don't know what to do about the big Facebook requests on everyone's sites apart from making sure you only have one pixel activated.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @Tutorilux ,

Just had a look at this for you. I can't actually access that www.googleadservices.com domain at all, let alone the JS file your site's trying to request. 2 seconds is a pretty hefty amount of load time to waste, so I agree it would be good to get rid of it.

Have you got Tag manager installed and the request setup through there by any chance?

If you post your URL, there's a way to see which store file triggers the request.

Hi @Ignatiusted ,

There's a big opportunity to save time by adding lazy loading to your image tags, just adding

loading=lazy

to image tags in your theme will do the trick with most browsers. <img GOES HERE, another-attribute=another-value>

Your biggest third-party javascript file is your fast checkout. This could be misleading though, as if it's pure Javascript and triggered after page-load, then that's not really a problem. Even if Google reports it as one.

Oli

Hi @Rose9797 ,

You have a labels app that seems to be adding 350ms to your load time. Although it might be running in parallel to other processes, so you would probably have to test removing it before having a concrete answer.

I hate to say it, but most of your store’s loading time comes from your theme. So, not really something you want to tinker around with too much.

That said, the apps you mention might have injected code into your theme and not cleaned up after themselves. I would suggest going through each of the apps you installed and googling how to remove them. Our app has a button especially for this task, but I’ve seen plenty that requires removing code manually.

Good luck!

Hi @Tutorilux ,

Just had a look at your site and the Google lighthouse test.

No big Javascript files stand out, Facebook and your Shopify themes are the larger requests.

Google is giving you a low score because of all of your images. You do have lazy loading on, and to be honest your product pages load really fast for me.  Maybe consider removing the images from your review widget, if you would like to improve the score.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @Gigi0ne ,

No worries at all.

Your Shopify theme downloads a big Javascript file that takes half a second. We can't get rid of this though unfortunately. You've also got quite a lot of little Javascript requests, either from your theme or from apps. None of them are bad, but all together they add up.

I know this isn't the best news, in terms of things you can do to increase page speed. If it's any consolation, your website loads under 2secoonds for me, homepage + product pages.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi @Rhood1 ,

Google's mainly complaining about unused Javascript with your store. It mentions there's a saving of 200kb or so if a menu app beginning with a 'Q' is optimised. If you're not using it, I would just turn it off for now.

I'm not entirely sure I believe Google on there result, it says the time to your site being interactive is 15 seconds! I'm using Google Lighthouse which mimics a bad internet connection, but still... My Mac loads your product pages in about 2 seconds. It might be some funny Javascript which is causing an issue with the test results. Or it might be a reflection of the large number of different Javascript requests.

Here's a list of Javascript processes running on your store :

Well, I figured I could post here as well.

My stores desktop speed used to be above a 90, now it's an 84, I don't think that is horrible.

However my mobile speed is under a 30. Can you take a look as well? You've been super helpful to everyone already!

Hi @YourGC ,

No worries at all. It might be worth opening your site from your phone using 'incognito' or 'private' mode, so you can see what pop-ups are coming up for new visitors. Sometimes this can be surprising.

In terms of removing unused Javascript, Google says Facebook and your chat bot are the biggest offenders.

Hope that helps,

Oli

Hi @Rhood1 ,

It can often be as simple as removing code manually. I would definitely google how to remove that specific app before trying anything though. Sometimes there are guides etc.

If you are going to remove code, I would recommend duplicating your template and then making changes to the duplicate, then previewing them.

I once had a horrible experience where I removed an old app's code from a client's product page and it made all of her prices display as 0! We didn't realise for hours. I still feel terrible about it now. So, testing before going live is highly recommended, some apps are less responsible than others when it comes to the uninstallation process.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi Oli, can you please have a look at my website too and help me with speed problems?

I have a similar issue. My website is severly slowed down & bugged because of doofinder with other apps I no longer use. Also it messed up my theme. I now have an unneccessary gap on my site.

Can you fix it?
