Only one Default Package Size to calculate customer shipping rates is a joke! What's the work around

Ok - So Imagine a department store, a garden center, a home store,  now imagine the varieties of merchandise they carry AND ALL THE SIZES!!!  AND Shopify only uses ONE default package size to determine customer real time shipping rates?  I know that BigCommerce allows items to be listed with dimensions as well as weights so dimensional shipping weight can be calculated - this means it can't be that complicated to implement.

Why can't we at least add the correct package size to the item page so the dimensional weight can be calculated?

Or Why won't Shopify use our chosen packages assigned to products via the laborous drop down in the Shipping section to calculate? I'd appreciate any input, insight or work around from the community, or from Shopify Staff.

The only thing I've found so far is Intuitive Shipping's App - but they're not fully integrated and so it's a a challenge to use, is not synced with Shopify Shipping calculator, there's no search etc etc.

We have hundreds of items in a POS and need to calculate correct shipping costs for customers at the counter when checking out - we also need our customers to buy online and get correct calculated rates.

Here's what Shopify says: "Shopify allows only one default package size to determine shipping rates for all products to simplify the shipping process. This means that when calculating shipping costs at checkout, the dimensions and weight of the default package are used in conjunction with the weights of the products in the cart. If you want to use different package sizes for specific products, you can select a custom package when purchasing shipping labels, but the default package will still be used for rate calculations at checkout unless you change it in your settings."

It's a joke - please help.
