Set inventory level without product varint sku

Good day. I connected fulfilment service to my shopify store and created product without sku for my default location. I used fulfilment service location id to set inventory level but got the "Inventory item is missing a sku" error

Is there a way to set the inventory level  for inventory item VIA API without specifying sku for the appropriate product variant?

Interesting - shouldn't be required. I can't remember the exact last time I tested this but pretty sure I have.
