Validate and prove VAT ID's within the checkout and set tax exempt

Hello! 🙂

We like to set up a Checkout UI Extension to validate and prove VAT ID's in the EU and set the tax exempt to true for the cart. What is the right API for that?

What I see is:

+ Storefront API: Is only used for headless applications not for Liquid templates right?
+ Admin API: Is only for the backend application
+ Ajax API: It has not the scope for that

So what is the right way to achieve a solution like mentioned above?
