Automatically redirect customers to the right experience, pricing, and language

Hi everyone, we're excited to let you know that we've added the ability for merchants to automatically redirect their cross border customers to the right international domain within a single store.

For example, if you use example.com to target the United States and example.ca to target Canada, a visitor from Canada who lands on example.com is automatically redirected to your .ca domain. This means that visitors are automatically localized to the right currency, pricing, and language.

If you use international domains, you can enable automatic redirection in Online Store --> Preferences:

More details about the new feature and how to setup international domains can be found in the Help Centre: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/domains/managing-domains/international-domains#switc...

Hey @coleatkinson,

Thanks for the useful information.

We've implemented the below onto our website:
https://uk.lupetechnology.com/ directing to the UK with the default currency set as GBP.
https://lupetechnology.com/ for the ROW with the default currency set as USD.
We are also using the Shopify Geo-location app with a pop-up and currency selector. However, when on the UK site and then changing the currency to USD with the currency selector, the currency changes but the site remains the UK one. Is there a way to have it redirect to the US domain?

Thanks,

Gaelle

Hey Gaelle,

This is because your domain is actually set to *Rest of World*, you don't
have a domain assigned to the United States, so when you switch to that
country on the storefront, Shoopify has nothing to switch to.

We will later allow you to use the same domain to target both individual
countries/regions *and* Rest of World which would solve this for you. For
now, you can make your .com domain target the United States specifically.
Or keep your current ROW configuration and add a new subdomain like
us.lupetechnology.com to target the USA.

Hi Cole,

Thanks for your reply.

What would happen for the all other countries if our current ROW domain was changed to target the US specifically?

Thanks,

Gaelle

It would basically trigger an automatic hreflang
<>
tag that would indicate to Google and other search engines that this domain
is for US customers, but your global customers would still be able to
access it and see it in search results.

We can turn off those automatic hreflang tags for you, if you'd like to
contact our support team. You would then need to implement them yourself in
your theme.
