Global expansion, localizing content, and selling in multiple currencies and languages
Hi there, with the change to Markets in Shopify, is it possible for the Basic Shopify plan also to set manual exchange rates for particular markets / countries? Or does that functionality only work on the Shopify plan, even though it can still be input on the Basic Shopify plan?

Hi, @Art_JulieMiller.
Thank you for following up and sharing the additional context!
I think it does make sense that you would want to offer a better rate for South Africa, especially since that's where you're getting the inventory from. However, aside from upgrading to the Shopify plan, you can also consider having two separate Shopify stores. Having one store for South Africa and one for International allows you to set different prices for the products and, depending on your business needs, this could be more cost-efficient than upgrading to a higher tiered plan. Did you get a chance to explore this type of setup for your business?
There are definitely some advantages to upgrading to the Shopify plan, such as getting better credit card processing rates, access to professional reports, and better Shopify Shipping discounted rates. However, this would be something that you'll need to evaluate down the road and weigh the benefits.
That being said, I understand that you'd like to see at least one manual rate available for Shopify Markets for the Shopify Basic plan, and I'd be happy to pass this feedback along to our development team. If Shopify moves forward with any changes to the manual exchange rates on Shopify Markets, then we'll be sure to announce them on the Shopify Changelog.
I think your website (juliemiller.art/en-ca) looks amazing! I love that you have a live chat widget on your store. Do you run any ad campaigns at the moment? Or, do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

Hey, @Art_JulieMiller.
Thanks again for the follow-up!
I'm glad to hear that having two stores is an option that you can explore. If you do move forward with this type of setup, then you can consider linking the two stores using the navigation on each store. Feel free to create a new development or trial store, and see if this will work for your business!
That being said, while it does look like you're already using some form of geolocation on your store, you may also be able to use geolocation to display the preferred store based on the customers' location or their preferences. If the one you're using now isn't able to do this, then please take a look at our list of geolocation apps.
I'd love to hear how this solution works for your store. Please keep me posted!

Hi, @Art_JulieMiller.
Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!
I'm afraid it's not possible to set manual exchange rate conversions on the Shopify Basic plan, as this feature is only available for Shopify Markets on the Shopify plan or higher at this time. However, I've also noticed that you're also a Shopify Partner, so it's possible that you're able to access some of the currency settings while working on a development store. Just to confirm, is your store on the Shopify Basic or Development plan?
I understand that this is an important feature for you and I'd be more than happy to submit a feature request to our development team on your behalf. That being said, I'd love to hear more about your business before doing so and gather more context for the feature request as well. What kinds of products does your store sell? Do you need to provide manual exchange rates often and why?

Hi there, thank you for your response.
I do have a development store for testing new functionality but I have a live store. I sell art and related merchandise from South Africa. You can see my website at juliemiller.art
I literally only need one manual exchange rate for South Africa because I build international shipping prices into my international pricing so that people pay the price they see. No one (especially me) likes to get to the checkout page and see money added for shipping.
So, given that local delivery is inexpensive and international shipping is very expensive, I need to set a manual exchange rate for South Africa only.
I did try doing separate pricing in the product import file on the Basic Shopify plan but it didn’t seem to work, so I’ve had to upgrade to the Shopify plan literally only for a single manual exchange rate.
Hope that makes sense and gives you the context you need?
Kind regards,
Julie

I did not think about that as a solution and it is a great option. I am going to look into that for sure. Thank you 🙂
We do run a few ad campaigns on Google and Social Media.
Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it and I love your solution!

Gosh Elias, I REALLY appreciate all your input and thank you for the further suggestions. This has been on my mind since yesterday and although I will need to pay for apps on 2 stores rather than one, it will still be less expensive than paying for Shopify vs Shopify Basic.
Regarding Geolocation, I am using Geofly from the Shopify App store and I'm certain they'll be able to assist me.
Again, thank you so so much for your EXCELLENT support. You are a perfect example of what makes Shopify the best!!! 6 star rating!!!
