Is it possible to utilise a metafield within a tag?

Our theme manages product labels/badges via tags... as below

Tags are not translatable within Shopify and we sell in multiple countries/languages. Is there a way to utilise metafields within a tag at all?

I'm not clever enought to figure out any solution for this so any help would be great

No, tags are tags are data strings not deeper logic constructs that have operation "within" in and of themselves.

So be careful with any possible solution as they will be based on a technically unsound question trying to prescribe it's own solution.

Use the free shopify-flow app , or the mechanic app, etc to automate converting tags into metafields then translate the metafields or adding custom translated tags.

And/or custom the theme to display metafields, or special tags in place of the original tags.

This will NOT address themes using tag based collection url filtering i.e. /collections/collection+handle/red+shirt+men

Yes, I think you can automatically copy each tag into a metafield and then translate it with an Excel-like app that pulls Shopify data.
