Global expansion, localizing content, and selling in multiple currencies and languages
Hello, I need to translate my products packaging to sell in another country, and I've been informed I need to create a new EAN number for that. I wonder if there's a way to localize this in Shopify without creating a duplicate of the product in my admin.
For example, for the same product I'm originally selling in France with EAN xxxxxxxxxx332, to localize only the "UPC/EAN" field in Germany with EAN xxxxxxxxxx333 for this product without having to create a new one.
Is it possible?
You would typically NOT assign a new EAN code when selling to a different region in language specific packaging. Normally you would only assign a new EAN code only if the product itself changes. Having a different identifier may help operationally by making it easier for a warehouse to find and ship the product in the packaging specific for the destination region, but it is not a requirement of GS1 that I am aware of. If the business problem driving this stems from an operational issue, It would be better to have only one product in Shopify and find a different solution for the operational challenge. If you need to model this In Shopify, I would make a duplicate product with region specific SKUs, but with the same EAN in the barcode field. You could print an additional region specific barcode on the package matching the SKU for the warehouse to use that is not the EAN code if they cannot handle this another way. You could export your products, add a prefix or suffix to the SKU and import them to avoid updating them individually.
