Conversations about creating, managing, and using metafields to store and retrieve custom data for apps and themes.
Hello,
I'm setting up a website for haircare products and each product has quite a fair bit of information tied to them. I have information like: "How to use" and "Key Ingredients" which I need to include for each product.
Since I have 300+ products, is there a way that I can automatically add these metafields to the products or is there a specific header which I can add to my excel sheet so that it can be detected and synced when I upload it to Shopify?
Please help!
Thanks.

Hello,
Unfortunately the Shopify admin CSV product export/import doesn't support metafields. I've seen lots of people request it but it hasn't been added yet. That said, there are two ways I'm aware of to edit these.
In the Shopify admin, you can use the 'bulk editor' to edit the metafields in a table-like view. If you want to set the same value for multiple fields this might ways as you can copy/paste a single value across multiple rows. There's some additional instructions here: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/custom-data/metafields/bulk-edit-metafields
If that doesn't work for you I would recommend checking out a third-party app, like our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor. Here's a video walkthrough showing how you could update your metafields with a spreadsheet using the app:
It's also possible to update the values without a spreadsheet and it has several advantages over the Shopify CSV export/import including previews, being able to view the progress of the edit and a one-click undo option.
Happy to help answer any follow up questions, either about the Shopify bulk editor or metafields in general. Best,
Daniel

Hello,
While it's possible to create metafields in bulk using Shopify's APIs, there's no easy way to do this via the admin. And this is in case you already have the data for metafields ready.
In case you are looking for an automated way to identify and update the metafields data for all your products - to help with merchandising, filtering, search, etc, we have an app in testing mode for the same and will be happy to have you try it out.
