Update Unavailable qty of variant via API?

Hi.

I am trying to update Unavailable QTY of a variant by API but i can't find a solution. Is this possible? If Yes, than how?

Unavailable inventory refers to the number of units that are reserved for draft orders, set aside by apps, or other inventory hold reasons, such as damaged, quality control, or safety stock. This isn't directly adjustable via the API.

So apps just adjust the unavailable count through osmosis? Or do apps use the API to adjust that number?

Similar to SKULabs questions. You say "..reserved for draft orders, set aside by apps, or other inventory hold reasons, such as damaged..". How do apps "set it aside"? I imagine it has to be through API access, no?
