Displaying Data from Shopify App in Storefront and Querying External Endpoint

Hi,

I am using the Shopify create node Shopify CLI command to spin up a store. It all working great thanks to this youtube video. But I'm am starting to face issues when 

1. Trying to read an external API endpoint. Is there a standard way to do this?

2. Displaying the data from the endpoint on the Storefront. This seems to hint at what I'm looking to do, but there are no examples on how to use the Shopify app to display data on the Storefront. 

I have been looking all around the internet, and for some reason, I can't find an explanation. This seems to be common practice among many Shopify apps. Am I missing something?

would love any type of help, and input.
