Collection Tag Filtering for Warehouse 2.5.1

Hi there,

I am aware that Shopify no longer allows filtering by tag for 2.0 theme versions and that I can use the default filters under Navigation > Collections, HOWEVER I need to be able to filter collections by product type (this I've done) AND filter the list further by using tags as well (this is where I'm stuck) due to the nature of the product.

For example, in the Engine Performance collection, I can filter down to Product Type > Air Filters, but then I need to see air filters for specific car makes such as BMW by using a product tag filter.

Can I do this using metafields (collection metafields says 'coming soon') and if so would it be a standard definition or a custom definition?
