Hi i am using The theme Dawn which says it supports product video uploads. however when i try to upload a video in the product section it comes back to tell me that i cant upload my file and that i might need to possible update my theme?

Depends   on what dawn them you might be using, if it is outdated  or not  
go into the shop free themes  under your  themes  section in shopify  and download the lastest  theme  

also it might not support mov files but mp4  files  that are anything less than 20 MB
