Q: What is USDC?
USDC is a form of cryptocurrency called a stablecoin. It is pegged to the US dollar. Stablecoins minimize the volatility risks associated with other cryptocurrencies. Shopify Payments customers will now be able to accept USDC on Base: a fast and reliable payment network built for everyday commerce. Customers will need to hold and send their USDC on the Base network, which they can manage from inside their crypto wallet.
Q: What is changing?
Shopify is adding USDC on Base as a payment method in guest checkout and Shop Pay. Customers can pay with USDC using hundreds of supported crypto wallets on the Base network, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network. USDC on Shopify Payments will be rolling out starting on June 12th- eligible merchants will receive a notification when they can opt in to USDC payments, and they can also check their Payments Settings page in Shopify admin.
Q: Is this payment method available globally?
USDC payments on Base, through Shopify Payments, will be available in 34 countries at launch, with some regional exceptions (customers in New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Alaska will get USDC payments later in 2025).
Q: Do I need any crypto knowledge or special setup to accept USDC payments?
Not at all! USDC payments are built directly into Shopify Payments—no additional apps, gateways, or expertise required. Merchants using Shopify Payments can enable USDC simply by turning it on in your payment settings in your Shopify admin.
Q: How will I receive payments made in USDC?
You have two options:
Q: Are there any additional fees for accepting USDC payments?
USDC acceptance is offered at your standard domestic Shopify Payments rate—no additional fees, foreign exchange fees, or gas fees for your customers. Coming later this summer, merchants will receive an additional rebate on their Shopify Payments rate for payments made in USDC - stay tuned for details.
Q: How will this affect the customer's checkout experience?
Customers will see it as an additional payment option at checkout, alongside existing payment methods.
Q: What if I want to stop accepting USDC payments later?
You can easily turn off this payment method at any time by visiting your payment settings in your Shopify admin.
Q: What about payment security and fraud protection?
USDC payments benefit from the security of our smart escrow contract, which is specifically designed for safe commerce transactions. The system supports industry-standard payment operations including authorization, capture, and refunds. Chargebacks are not possible today for stablecoin payments.
