Adding a Local Delivery Option

I'm very new to the Shopify platform, so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious. We are a very small coffee roaster in Cleveland and our intention is to deliver for free in a handful of our surrounding zip codes. Does anyone here know the best way to accomplish this second "FREE" option in our Shipping section (screenshot below of another Shopify site doing exactly what we need)?

Here's a shot of our current cart:

Screen Shot 2019-12-06 at 11.19.41 AM.pngAnd if we could simply serve the below option to users checking out using our short list of zip codes, it would be a huge help:

Any ideas or guidance at all would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jason

Hey, there!

My name is Ren from the Shopify support team and I have some suggestions here that may work for you. For local deliveries, you can try utilizing an app called Store Pick up and Delivery by Zapiet.

This app comes with a whole range of features and most notably, allowing customers to check if their location is eligible for deliveries, postal/zip code validation and delivery time slots. It's very feature heavy, and comes with a cost, but may be suitable for what you need.

Another option, which is more like the example you posted, involves creating a manual shipping rate, labelling it as "free local delivery" (or whatever you see fit) and utilizing a postal/zip code validation app so only people located in your designated areas will be allowed to check out with that option. You can review a range of options here. I suggest checking out Product Zipcode Validator and Easy Shipping Restrictions.

To create a manual rate like I described above, check out the steps below:

Hi Ren!

Thanks so much for your response. To be clear, If i'm able to create a manual shipping rate in the Shopify backend, then integrate an app like this one: https://apps.shopify.com/delivery-rates-by-zipcode feeding it our whitelist of zip codes that qualify for local delivery we'll be able to offer the exact experience I posted above?

Hey, there!

Almost right! For this particular app, you can designate the desired rate directly in the app screen. Here's an overview of the instructions: alt

You tell the app which postal or zip codes you want to offer delivery to, configure and name the rates as you'd like them to appear. In my example here I put $0 as the quantifier (which translates to "free" during checkout) and named it "local delivery" with the subtext "local delivery from 2-5pm".

That should do it. Only customers who place an order from the designated postal/zip codes that you want to offer delivery to will see the option to select it.

To use this app, you do need to have carrier calculated rates active, as per this information below. If you already have it, you're good to go! If not, check your email as I have forwarded you instructions on how to set that up!alt

Let me know if you have any questions!

I agree with him. Problem for me is the apps don’t work with the buy button ( I have my own website but use the collection buy button code). So it virtually makes no sense to even have the local delivery option with no restrictions other than price and weight. I have a $300 material min plus a $70 delivery. Should be with in 20 miles but since Shopify only has states I have texas which is larger than most countries. If this option was built in and it should be I could use it with the buy button. I have hours upon hours invested and this has derailed everything.

Hi, @BellStone

Thanks for sharing your feedback! Typically, apps can't function with accounts that only have a Lite plan (buy button) because there needs to be a theme/storefront to develop the code for.

I do understand your concerns with needing a local delivery option within a 20 mile radius. An option might be to add free shipping and change the name to "local pick up" and specify the delivery limits very clearly, then follow up with a customer via email to arrange the deliver though this method is going to be tedious. Ultimately, it may be worth considering moving your website over to Shopify and have a full store with checkout, which will allow you greater flexibility with the options you'd like to make available to your customers.

If you'd like any support making the switch, I'm here to help! We also have 24/7 online support here.

As an update here, we were finally able to easily implement this change by upgrading our Shopify account to an annual plan, and then running the “Delivery Rates By Zip Code” app by Zapiet. Their support team answered my setup questions quickly, and for a very low monthly fee we’re now able to easy offer free local delivery to the whitelisted zip codes we support with that service.

It kinda feels like this functionality should be baked into Shopify, or at the least more easily achieved, but once we added the 3rd party app, it was a breeze and works great for our needs.

Hope this helps someone else facing the same challenge.

I am trying to do the same thing.  I installed the Zapiet Delivery by Zip Codes app, and upgraded to an annual billing cycle, and it says to contact Shopify support to enable the API for calculated shipping rates.  I cant for the life of me get the "contact shopify" function to work.  It just keeps spitting me back to a page that asks me to login.  Help!

@Jason_42 I have been trying (very unsuccessfully) to integrate a delivery option on our site as well.  Right now we use calculated rates with shopify for shipping.  I downloaded the free trial with zapiet for "store pick up and delivery", but using this forces me to use their shipping integration which then negates any discounts I get with shopify postage.  do you still ship as well as deliver?  and if you ship, is zapiet calculating the rates, or does it still flow through shopify.  i'm hesitant to download something else from zapiet after the wasted hours I've spent on it.  Thanks for any insight.

Is it possible to add certain items for local delivery and certain items to be shipped?

Hi @PBGrocery and @Pt2020

To update everyone, Shopify now has a built-in Local Delivery option so you are no longer required to use the workaround I described in my initial response.

Local delivery can be established as an option only if the following requirements are met:

  • All physical products in the cart are eligible for delivery from one location.
  • The delivery location has the inventory available to fulfill the entire order.
  • The customer doesn't choose an accelerated checkout method other than Shop Pay in the first step of the checkout. If the customer pays using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or PayPal, then the delivery option is not available.
  • The customer's delivery address can be verified by Google. At checkout, customers can use the dropdown menu of suggested addresses to select a verified address.

    Additionally:

The customer's shipping address must be:

    • within the designated delivery radius and the same province or state, or within the designated postal codes and in the same country.

You can see the full details and instructions for setting up your own local delivery at this link here

Shopify also has a Local Delivery App that will further enable you to customize your options into order lists and specific delivery routes. Check it out here!

To answer your questions specifically @Pt2020, you can set up local delivery by Assigning Inventory via this document here.

Happy to help if you have any questions about getting set-up!

Hi, I’ve set-up the Shopify local delivery option and it is indeed showing at checkout but, one of my lowest cost shipping options is now no longer showing. I’ve always had two shipping options set up — first class and priority 1-day. I checked and my first class shipping is definitely still set up in Shipping setting. Can you please tell me why my first class shipping option no longer appears once I added the local delivery option? I only added it for a 5 mile radius so I still need the first class shipping option to show up. Any assistance with this issue would be appreciated.

Hello @Okwuma

Thanks for reaching out. I understand you're concerned that your first-class shipping option appears to have disappeared once you've added the Shopify Local Delivery option. Without seeing your settings, I can't help too much but in the event that there is a glitch or perhaps user error, I would suggest contacting our live support for a hand as they will be able to gather the full context of the issue and gain the visibility required to assess the problem for you.

An example of user error would be something not quite lining up with your first-class shipping parameters in the cart. Perhaps the order is too heavy and falls outside of the parameters for the first-class rate.

You can log in here on our Support page for a hand. I would also suggest reviewing our help documents on setting up your shipping rates and cross-referencing the points to be sure everything is set up correctly - this will be helpful for your Advisor to know when you get connected. Best of luck!

I currently have a storefront on Shopify and will be working with an app for local delivery (shipsi for Shopify), but it has a delivery radius restriction. Customers must go through the whole process of selecting items and checkout and only find out in the end if they are eligible for shipping.

I'm wondering if there is a way we can have customers check eligibility of service/delivery? Perhaps with establishing a webpage with a map so they can entire their address to check if they are within the 10-mile radius, or some sort of pop up.

I want to see if there is a way to have customers validate their eligibility for delivery before the checkout step. So, if they are not eligible for delivery, they don't go through the whole process thinking it can be delivered and then be disappointed it cannot.

Do you think this is something that can be accomplished somehow, or have any insight as to what next step I should take?

Hi there,

Sorry for the delay in responding - we have only just seen a number of mentions on the forum, going forwards we will get a notification for forum posts and respond much quicker.

Our app Store Pickup + Delivery can offer an early validation banner on the landing page that allows the customer to check their delivery eligibility along with a host of other great features. The app comes with a 14-day free trial, and we offer free professional set up sessions to new merchants to make onboarding as easy as possible.

If you need any more assistance or information you can email us at supprt@zapiet.com, you can also start a live chat via the Support tab in the Store Pickup + Delivery app or by visiting www.zapiet.com.

Take care,

Kitty
